Alcohol at pta event

Hi,
I’m not sure if this is right topic but I can’t find a pta one!

Wondered if anyone can help? I am chair of a pta. We are holding event at school and others think you can “sell” alcohol by asking for donations and this means no licence is needed. I don’t think you can do that. I wondered how other ptas do this?

Thanks,

I vaguely remember buying a token or raffle ticket that I could exchange for alcohol.

We just got a temporary licence from the LA for every event, easy to do online

We got a temporary license too.

Government guidance

If you sell it you need a licence, but you can give it away for free without one.

'Your charity can give alcohol away at events or meetings without a licence, but you must make it clear that the value of the alcohol is not included in any ticket price or entrance fee.'

As far as I know they can win the alcohol but can't consume it at the event. So you can't have people "winning" a glass of wine...

ScrumptiousBears · 28/03/2022 10:04

It's very easy to get a temporary license

User478 · 28/03/2022 10:06

I've definitely been to events where you can enter the raffle for a glass of red wine or the white wine raffle...

License was £21 from LA when I did PTA a few years ago. You can then specify a price list for drinks.
However at some events we got round it by asking for suggested donations for alcoholic drinks. People generally paid the donation and didn't take the piss.

Temporary Events Licence. Cost about 20 quid. Lasts for a day. Via your local council website.

We get a temporary licence.

Niece’s school did ‘buy a raffle ticket for a chance to win some crap prize but the raffle ticket entitles you to a free glass of wine’

CherieBabySpliffUp · 28/03/2022 10:42

We didn't get a license for the booze raffle at my daughter's school. Am pretty sure we checked with our council that we didn't need one.

DebtheSander · 28/03/2022 10:42

Yes, you need a temporary events license. I have been on a PTA and we had a full premises licence - I was at one time the “Landlady”.

Many PTAs will try the donation of raffle route. But if you do, you are actually breaking the law over the selling of alcohol. And doing so on school property. No way would I put my name to that.

Oh and the other thing you can’t do is go on a booze cruise to France, buy a load of cheap wine, bring it back and sell it at your event. Booze you bring into the country is for your own personal consumption or to give away as a gift. So bringing champagne in to give to your guests at your wedding is fine. Cheap plonk to sell for the PTA to increase your profits, not fine.
