Carving out time

For anyone who has managed to learn another language, write a novel or train for that marathon etc whilst working and having a family, how do you manage to carve out regular time to do it? I need to make a few changes otherwise I can see myself 10 years down the line still thinking the same thing “if only I had time...”.

I used to get up really bloody early. I'm not the sort of person that does anything in the evening really, if it needed to be done it had to be before the kids got up.

Oh and in my case it was training for 10k swims so further restricted by pool lane swimming times etc.

You pick something and do it regularly, it becomes your normal.
I do an exercise class for one hour a week and it’s non negotiable.

But what about competing pressures on time - looking after the kids, housework...tiredness...
