Low carb diet.... portion control?

Posted elsewhere but no answer. Trying low carb diet. I'm enjoying the food but does weightloss depend on portion control?

Looking at the bootcamp threads I think the gist is that it doesn't but it's difficult not to wonder if I am overdoing it particularly re fat (based on my fitness Pal)

Daily intake

Calories 1,160
Carbs 14
Fat 73
Protein 77

Weight loss is simply being in a calorie deficit. Although I agree that for some people carbs really bloat them.

Burn more than you eat. As boring as that, really.

PickAChew · 18/03/2022 19:20

Well that is a pretty low calorie intake. It's likely you'd lose weight, whatever the composition of your diet.

Sunnybeaches · 18/03/2022 19:59

It's nearly twice as much fat as My Fitness Pal recommends for my weightloss goal.

Going by those macros you are only getting around 5% from your carb intake so the fat would need to be around that mark to make up the rest of your calorie intake to 100%

PickAChew · 18/03/2022 23:44

My fitness pal recommends fairly high carb macros. I don't low carb but when I've used mfp, I've taken 5% off the carbs and added it to the fat, instead. Just adjust them to what you're aiming for.

@Sunnybeaches

It's nearly twice as much fat as My Fitness Pal recommends for my weightloss goal.
Well, that means absolutely nothing since OP is on a low carb diet!

If ypu follow a low carb diet, then a calorie deficit isn't important but your macro ratio (fat:protein:carb).

When I did keto (although I was never strict keto) my macros were

Carbs 20g
Protein 63g
Fat 135g

Around 1600 cals a day.

The weight fell off.

I no longer keto but I do low carb (under 50g a day). My calorie intake is probably around 1400-1700 most days. I never crave crap food and I look about 10 years younger to boot!

There's a good fb group that has lots of information and is run by people who've been doing it for years. The before and after photos of members are incredible.

Weightless is not about calorie deficit in the long term (which is why people yoyo for years and WW and SW have so many returning customers!) It's about hormone regulation which can have positive effects on a number of health conditions too.

Portion control doesn’t really matter on low carb, assuming you are basically eating protein and fat (meat, fish, chicken, eggs, dairy) plus lots of veg / salad.

Protein and fat are pretty self limiting, if you don’t eat really fast: you’ll feel satiated when you’ve had enough. And non starchy veg / salads are pretty unlimited.

I’ve never looked at macros, just stuck with enough-protein/fat-to-satisfy-plus-lots-of-veggies-and-salad way of eating.

Sunnybeaches · 19/03/2022 07:17

I need to read a bit more about macro ratio and the science. Low carb appeals because carbs make be feel bloated anyway but it's difficult to get my head around losing weight whilst eating cheese etc.

The reason I mentioned my fitness Pal is that it doesn't show a very quick predicted weightloss based on my figures (yesterday's food diary) - I think because the fat and protein are higher than they suggest.
But seems it's not relevant.

@workwoes123 sorry I hadn't seen your reply. The self limiting thing is what I was wondering about. As in is it (the low carb approach) based on self limiting but perhaps I am eating more than the theory thinks people will.

I don’t record macros or calories or anything.

Also remember once you’re in ketosis your appetite decreases dramatically, you don’t get hanger, or huge cravings so I found as I progressed in the early days I naturally ate less

Relentlessrose · 19/03/2022 07:39

Your calories seem low, but macros seem fine for keto

WeRTheOnesWeHaveBeenWaitingFor · 19/03/2022 07:42

By keeping it low carb you won’t feel as hungry and the low cal will mean you’ll lose weight. The science for the rest of it is unconvincing.

Lubeyboobyalt · 19/03/2022 07:48

I low carb (doing fast 800 keto)

I used to take the recipes and stick to the allocated protein and fat involved but I don't limit the veg at all long as its leafy greens or broccoli

After about 3 days doing that I lost almost all my hunger and all portions are fine, no extra veg needed. No urge to snack. Brilliant.
