Is having a temporary crown fit supposed to be this painful?

Had a root canal on a broken tooth a couple of months ago and finally went to have a temporary crown fit over the tooth today. I was hoping to avoid the cost of a crown hence why it’s taken me so long to make the appointment but the gum is all swollen and causing throbbing pain so the dentist said a crown was my only option.

I wasn’t expecting it to hurt at all really from what I’d read online but it was absolute agony. He didn’t numb it beforehand which was unexpected (is that the usual thing to do?!) and I had to put my arm up to tell him it was too painful. I was honestly on the verge of tears more than once, even numbing it didn’t help (he didn’t wait for it to take effect so possibly why) and it was still just as painful. Felt like it was perhaps pointless and I should just have had the tooth pulled. Is this a normal experience? I felt like I was being tortured, I’m still in pain now.

If you are having a throbbing achy pain from a root filled tooth it is nothing to do with the crown, rather the root filling may be failing. They don’t always work.

I thought that too and thought the swelling sounded like a failed root canal too but he did an X-ray and said the root canal looked fine so not sure.

No Confused I'd go back and speak to them. I've just had one done and after the local, all I really felt was some pulling and pushing. I had a bit of an ache from having my mouth open for am hour, but apart from that, nothing.

He didn’t numb it first which may be the reason it hurt so much, I’m not sure why he didn’t. He numbed it after I said it hurt too much but he didn’t wait for to take effect before carrying on.

If the tooth is root filled it is dead and shouldn’t feel the drilling. I always give people the choice to have local or not with root filled teeth. My preference is to have them numb.

The crown fitting after root canal should be painless and not need anaesthetic as the nerves have been removed. It sounds like there is something else going on with your tooth.

He said it’s cracked which I knew, that was the reason I needed a root canal in the first place. It’s never been the same since the root canal tbh, I always felt pressure when I bit down but over the past couple of weeks the gum has swelled and I’ve had extreme throbbing pain so I went back to the dentist and he said it’s broken and needs a crown to save it.

Hi! Just wanted to ask if yours stopped hurting or if there was more to it? I cracked my tooth on a bottle about 3 years ago, I had a root canal then. About 7 months ago a chunk of that tooth fell away, so I got a crown today, i was numbed but the pain im feeling now (4 hours later) is excruciating. It’s horrible and nothing is helping. My whole gum is badly bruised too.

Aw OP you poor thing, there’s nothing worse than dental pain. I had a root canal on a severely decayed tooth 6 years ago. 2 weeks ago I had a crown fitted as the tooth chipped. I wasn’t numbed and found it was painless, I was delighted at how easy it was (dental anxiety).

After about 6 hours I started to get real discomfort in the tooth, this was like a burning pain and so tender to bite on. Apparently this does happen as the adhesive agitates the tissue around the tooth while it cures. Thankfully after a couple of days this completely settled and I’ve had no further trouble. I really hope yours settles too 💐
