Gov site says this

If you are planning to travel to an EU country (except Ireland), or Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Andorra, Monaco, San Marino or Vatican City, you must meet the Schengen areaa_ rules.
Your passport must meet 2 requirements. It must be:
• less than 10 years old on the day you enter (check the ‘date of issue’)
• valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave (check the ‘expiry date’)

I'm travelling to Spain and returning on July 4th. My passport expires 22 November 2022. Which means it will have four months and two weeks remaining on my return journey.

Would you travel with this or would you renew it?

What is your passport start date. This is where other people have had problems. Passports were renewable up to 9 months before their expiry date in the past. The new rules state that the start date is the date that is applied to the ‘less than 10 years old’ bit

I mean the date of issue is what determines the passports age.

SoupDragon · 16/03/2022 18:13

I agree. The key date is the date it was issued, not the expiry date.

Provided your passport was issued less than 10 years ago, it will be valid as you have more than the required 3 months remaining.

Issued on 22 November 2012

If it meets the stated criteria, why do you think you need to renew it before you travel?

As others have said, you need to make sure you understand the implication of the date of issue, vs 'less than 10 years old' as the rules have changed but otherwise, providing that you don't plan to travel again between July and November, it will be valid for your trip in July.

However, if you might travel again later in the year, it's probably best doing it quite soon as this will be a quiet time of year and they tend to come back very quickly. But between about Easter and August, they're clogged up with the people who don't realise until their trip is near, that their passport needs renewing.

Your passport is fine

It is valid for 10 years and valid for more than 3 months after your travel date

Thank you for the replies, I just needed someone else to tell me it was fine
