Inhaler tips and tricks

I've been prescribed two different inhalers for breathlessness after covid (8 weeks ago). One is a steroid preventer, one is a reliever. I've never had asthma, usually fit and active. Now I'm struggling to walk for more than 15 minutes without being out of breath and in pain.

Any tips or tricks I need to know? The GP prescribed over the phone, so I've had no instructions bar the leaflet and a few Youtube videos. I bought a spacer, as some of the evidence seems to suggest they help you get more drug into your lungs.

Nice deep breaths through your mouth and hold it for at least 10 seconds

The steroid needs to be used regularly, usually twice a day to get the best effect but the reliever is just when needed
Having a spacer is a great idea as it does help inhale more.

The GP would not normally demonstrate inhaler technique but the community pharmacist who dispensed it should have explained it to you. I'd go back to them if you are unsure of anything

Breathe out before you take it, then breathe in the inhaler (CLOSE YOUR MOUTH) and hold for 10 seconds.

Asthma uk website has brilliant resources including clear demonstration videos for all types of inhalers

Plus there's a spacer demo video on there.

Thanks everyone. I’ve been using the preventer twice a day and it does now seem to be helping. I can walk up the three flights of stairs to my office again! The reliever really does work when I need it.
