Miracle throat cures

Have the worst sore throat today - progressively gotten worse through the day to the point it feels like I'm swallowing glass! It is quite red and swollen/inflamed.

Have tried:
• paracetamol
• ibuprofen
• hot salt water
• strepsils
• throat spray from pharmacy
• hot drinks
• yoghurts and ice cream
• lots of water

... nothing is touching it!! Usually when I've had sore throats the salt water or spray alongside painkillers do the trick but this isn't fading at all. Does anyone have any remedies they swear by? I will try anything, it is so sore. I don't even feel like my Friday night wine as I'm too scared to swallow anything SadShock

Have you taken a covid test? I have exactly the same symptoms and tested positive today.

babachic · 11/03/2022 20:59

@Youngatheart00

Oh forgot to say that! Yes I did a LFT earlier - had covid at the end of Jan for the second time so hoping it's not here again!

Hope your symptoms aren't too severe x

Diflam (?) spray can help.

Weirdly I’ve found a spoon of Nutella helps, it temporarily coats your throat with….something, that stops it hurting for a bit.

I used to get tonsillitis a lot in my 20s.

Gargle for a very long time with disprin in luke warm water and slowly swallow the water. Disgusting but it works.

However, you'll have to work out how that slots in with all the other pain meds you've taken.

timtam23 · 11/03/2022 21:03

My mum used to make me gargle with soluble aspirin. She also had a folk remedy for sore throats which I refused to try but my sister always said it worked - sliced onions sprinkled with brown sugar, and when the sugar & onion juice have mixed together, drink a spoonful of the juice

NancyDrawed · 11/03/2022 21:04

You poor thing! The only time I had a shards of glass throat it was proper full on tonsillitis, you have my sympathies.

Hopefully you will be able to see a dr over the weekend if antibiotics are needed.

Regardless of that, I gargle with soluble paracetamol for a bad sore throat, having been advised to do so by a nurse once. Obviously, if you have already maxed out on paracetamol for this 24hours you wont be able to try that until the morning.

Hope you get it sorted soon.

greenlynx · 11/03/2022 21:10

Salt water shouldn’t be hot just warm, the same for hot drinks. No wine, spicy or fried food. Less talking.
However with your description you’ve probably got tonsillitis and need antibiotics.

Peashoot1 · 11/03/2022 21:22

@greenlynx I agree with the antibiotics. It could be streothrost - Honey water - difflam and painkillers

billy1966 · 11/03/2022 21:24

My son has a sore throat and cough for the past 24 hours.
This has given him relief

In a cup put a soluble disprin, half a vitamin c dissolvable tablet, squirt of honey, good shake of apple cider, shake of orange juice and top the lot with hot water.

This is a version of my friends Grannys drink.
The apple cider is magic stuff for throats and coughs.

RosieRoww · 11/03/2022 21:24

Honey.
Buttermilk.

ehb102 · 11/03/2022 21:30

Oragel. It's the same stuff as the throat spray just much stronger. It's for toothache. Put it on your finger and rub it on your tonsils.

Gargle with a paracetemol solution.

Ice chips. It was the only thing that allowed me to get back to sleep one night.

tunainatin · 11/03/2022 21:33

Pineapple is very good for sore throats, if you can chop and blend a whole one and drink it.

Madre123 · 11/03/2022 21:33

Be careful it's not Quincy ....very nasty and painful...call nhs direct

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 11/03/2022 21:52

A peanut butter sandwich on properly cheap white bread is fairly foolproof for me x

babachic · 11/03/2022 22:04

Thank you for all the ideas, will never refuse a spoonful of nutella!

I've had a lot of painkillers so will leave the soluble ones till tomorrow if it's still as sore (hopefully not) but working my way through the others now. Fingers crossed something actually works!
