Car insurance query

Hi, posting on here because I've not been involved in any accident before and just want to check this is all above board.

Earlier today I went to the shops, while I was in there a car hit mine, I came out and the driver showed me, we exchanged details.

The bit I want to check is - their insurance company called me directly. They want to take details and sort out repairs. They say this way I won't need to register a non fault claim and it will just be logged as a notification with my insurance provider.

I had assumed they would contact my insurance company, and it would somehow be done through them. So, is this normal - the other party's insurance company contacts me directly?

Sorry if this sounds daft and it's all very normal, I am easily suspicious!

Ring your insurance and let them deal with it. You have to report the accident to your insurance anyway. Don’t deal with them direct.

Thank you. The lady who called me sounded very 'supportive' but they would do, I guess, if they are calling me direct because it's in their interest.

At fault insurer would rather do the work as it will be cheaper for them. Problem we had with this is that you have no contractual relationship with them, so if they mess up the repair, makes come back more complex.

Using your insurer will mean paying your excess until third party confirms liability. .
