This the current topic in my office so thought I would ask Mumsnet. What is the profession(s) that you respect the most? And has that changed since pre covid times?

For me it will always be fire fighter

Agree Fire. Nurses, doctors, scientists anyone medical. I have a new found respect for delivery drivers and warehouse workers post covid.

"Profession" or "Job"?

supermoonrising · 09/03/2022 16:07

Doctors probably. I also have a lot of respect for professional classical/jazz instrumentalists, as I know the amount of work and dedication it takes to achieve that standard.

Anyone who has to work with the general public.

Anyone who works with the elderly/infirm or works in surgery in hospitals. I'm not good with bodily fluids.

And refuse collectors (is that what we call bin men now?) and posties. They're always out whatever the weather and get little gratitude for vital jobs.

I lost some respect for firefighters when a group of them came to rewire our house - lots of them have second jobs, usually a trade, because of the shifts they work and these were obviously electricians - and were complete tossers and spoke to me like I was an idiot. It was fun pointing out when the biggest twat fitted a switch the wrong way round and he tried to tell me I was wrong.

Lol I feel this. I could never do it ever again. I don’t know how I did it for three years through university.

Also this. Ours are always so cheery even in the pissing down rain. Paramedics too, they must see some truly horrible stuff.

For me, doctors, teachers, nurses, dentists, other health workers, architects, engineers, farmers.

Then diplomatic services, emergency services, armed services.

MrPanks · 09/03/2022 16:17

The people who do the jobs that we value such as:
Health professionals (from consultants to HCAs)
Social care people - carers, SWs etc
School staff (from HT to lunch staff and cleaners)
Emergency professionals - Fire, ambulance, police
Cleaners
Dustmen

Ohwowhoho · 09/03/2022 16:17

Emergency services, teachers who work in residential schools, hospital doctors, nurses.

I have to admit I don’t respect police nearly as much as I probably should.

Ohwowhoho · 09/03/2022 16:18

I also really respect hospital porters.
