Fleeced on my mobile

Just having a moan.

I used to have am HTC One that lasted years and eventually got very slow and unuseable. I got sucked into getting the latest Samsung mobile at the time. I then dropped it (I know, I know) despite having a hard case for it the screen smashed. I kept it like that for over a year until the cost of repair went down. When I eventually got it fixed the phone shop did something to the sound so I could only hear calls on loud speaker. I was about to get it fixed then we went into lockdown. The shop that was fixing it is in the next town and I never got round to it.

The phone must be about 3 years old or so and the battery on it is terrible. It runs out in half a day. The charger takes forever to even be able to turn it on and I think full charge takes about half a day.

I got fed up and called my mobile provider for an upgrade. They let me out of the sim only contract and I got a new handset for over double what I was paying.

I then saw some deals online which were only only about a third more than the sim only - less data but I don't use that much, same phone.

I rang my provider to cancel the contract. After a long call got nervous as I do not have the box for the new phone. Worried that they will charge me if I send it back.

So have ended up keeping it but managed to get about £50 off the contract price, plus more data than will ever use.

I actually think I might cancel my broadband when that contract is up, and use the mobile hotspot for working from home, to try and bring the cost back down as I still can't justify it.

I am also going to have to leave my mobile provider when this contract is up. They always say they have the best deals but they really aren't.

Moan away.

Sim only on plusnet costs us about £9 per month each.
I’ve just bought an unlocked iPhone for DS off music magpie, mine is from there too. Their no quibble refund is great and they have 1 years warranty if you develop any faults. They even rent phones now if you want to pay monthly.
I will never go contract for my phone after car phone warehouse ripped me off and mis-sold my contract then took over 3 months to investigate, with me paying the whole time. Never again!

Hmm thank you for the advice! The cheaper deal I saw was with Fonehouse and what you say about CPW makes me glad I didn't use them.

The best phones I have had (I used to buy the HTC one on repeat) have been from CEX. I think they are similar to Music Magpie. They even offer 24 months warranty such is their confidence in their phones. I once had a fault and they sorted it straight away. Obviously there is the outlay on the handset but it is much better than being tied into a contract on an expensive phone that is just losing value every day.
