Asking for a friend

Friend been given a property through the council but has to carpet and furnish it herself. She is currently in a refuge and has nothing. Does anybody know if there are any grants available to her? I'm trying to Google but not getting anywhere fast.

I have given her a tv, bed and microwave but can't help further than that

Or contact the council directly and ask if they have grants available.

Normal to have to furnish it yourself, she can Try her council I think mine do a “white goods scheme” they are second hand, or ask on free cycle Facebook pages etc

Ask the council directly for grants you can apply for or sign posting to charities.
I was sign posted to a couple of charities by my ha when I was in a similar position as I didn't qualify for grants from the council/ha.

If she has children see if there's a local homestart. I've seen my local one put out Facebook appeals for people in situations like this and there's usually a good response.
I'm sure some councils offer carpeting grants but you're limited on colour choice etc.
For decorating look on places like Facebook market place for people giving away surplus paint free or very cheap

I didn't think of Facebook I'll have a look on there for her as she doesn't have a smartphone at the moment and I'll tell her to contact the council tomorrow. Thank you so much x

Are the children in school? They may be able to refer her to a local charity for essentials. Or the refuge may know of sources of support to signpost her to,

Look on fb and freecycle, you will be surprised how much is on there that people are giving away especially for people from refuges.

Try Gumtree - we put furniture on there free/very cheap all the time

My friend has asked me to thank you all. She managed to get some kind of welfare grant and I have managed to get her quite a lot of free stuff from Facebook. Thank you all so much

I'm glad she's got some help. She's lucky to have you too, you sound like a lovely friend Smile
