Where is this in Essex?

So I have a memory about a village in Essex I visited as a child. I was trying to recall where in Essex but I can’t think and have lost touch with people who lived there.

It had those weatherboard farmhouses, a church with cricket field and a bakery in village that baked fresh hot cross buns.

We visited a village/town with those houses on stilts by seaside.

My friend went to Felsted School.

When I look at Dunmow it doesn’t look quite right, I see this as far more villagey…

Who can solve my mystery?

Maybe Thaxted OP?

lostinabook · 05/03/2022 16:47

Was thinking Thaxted but tbh describes a few places. I grew up in Elsenham one of the less pretty villages

Maybe finchingfield? That is super picturesque Or Stebbing

Stock?

I think it’s Thaxted.

Was looking at great Dunmow but doesn’t ring any bells! Maybe I’ll just drive there one day!

Is the village by the sea?

Gonnagetgoing · 06/03/2022 07:53

@dayswithaY - no not by the sea. But approx 20 - 30 mins drive from the sea with those houses.

It seemed to me, I was 8 onwards til about 11 that it was a tiny village, I literally recall a handful of shops near the farmhouse my family friend had bought with a tiny village bakery freshly making hot cross buns. Then a church nearby and a cricket green. I had no idea my friend went to boarding school so near but he did.

Could it be the village of Felstead? Pleshey, or Alresford? It could probably be a village somewhere on the Blackwater Estuary.

Ingatestone? I've just left there after living there for a year. It has all those features. The cricket ground is next to the church.

Great Bentley?

beetlebrain · 02/10/2022 22:00

Coggeshall?

EmmaH2022 · 02/10/2022 22:06

I feel like it might be Saffron Walden but that’s too far from Felstead School? But if you went years ago, the drive was half the time it is now.
