Do supermarkets still have a very cheap brand . Asda used to have smart price tesco had tesco value. I'm not sure what morrisons and sainsburys one is Called.

I used to be able to do the whole family shop on the very cheap own brand. Can't seem to do that anymore . Do they still exist?

Yes but Sainsbury's and Tesco have rebranded them so it's not so obvious their bottom rung iyswim.

Look up the campaign Jack Monroe did recently about this. Asda have reinstated a few of theirs since she started it

Thank you. Just had a quick look at her up date. I also has a quick look on asda again typed in smart price. There is some stuff but nothing like it used to be. You can top up on pasta,Jam, eggs. couple sandwich fillings. Some tin stuff. but can't do a full family shop like used to be able to .

Tesco have 'Stockwells' as their cheap brand and I'm fairly sure that the basics brand in Sainsburys is 'J J James.'

wonkylegs · 05/03/2022 15:01

Morrisons is called Savers there are some available online but more in store. You could do a family food shop with them but it would be limited... if you stretched and combined with there regular brand you could do a full shop from a decent sized store.

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 05/03/2022 15:04

Yeah, a lot of is just rebranded so it appeals to more people.

Tesco do Stockwells and Ms Mollys, for example, rather than Tesco Value.

Muddlewitch · 05/03/2022 15:15

Yes Tesco have a few of them - stockwells is the brand for tins and cupboard stuff, Rosdene for fruit and redmere for veg, creamfields for dairy, Eastman's for cooked meat and Woodside for raw meat. There is probably more. If you search 'Aldi price match' on the Tesco app most of them will come up and you can search from there.

Sainsburys also have a few - Hubbards for food cupboard stuff, Mary Ann's for dairy, Stamford for frozen and The Greengrocer for fruit and veg. If you search 'basics' in the sainsburys app/website most of them come up.

It has made it much more difficult to find the cheap items.

wonkylegs · 05/03/2022 15:20

Oh yes and Morrisons do 'wonky' fruit and veg - which is really decent.

Topseyt · 05/03/2022 15:26

Tesco have a variety of "value" home brands now. The Hearty Food one is good value and seems to be exclusive to them. There is of course the Tesco one, the T E Stockwell ones and the Aldi price match ones. Grower's Harvest is another.

Tesco Value and Tesco Everyday Value have disappeared as far as I can tell. Some time ago.

MyDcAreMarvel · 05/03/2022 15:29

@Cookiecrumble22 Asda smart price online is very limited. They have a much bigger range in store.
