Male entitlement - handyman!

Omg I just need to let off steam - please tell me it isn't only me who finds this so extremely irritating?

We have a handyman here who was sent by our landlord to fix a few issues - some lights in the kitchen and a faulty hinge on the back door. So far he has taken his sweet time about everything, (5 hrs and counting plus 4 hours last Saturday until I kicked him out as we were having friends over for dinner!) he seems to have zero inkling that we might like to have our kitchen back at some point, never saying how long he'll be so I keep having to ask how it's going. He's been using the kitchen as his office making phone calls and chatting about other jobs for 15 minutes at a time and arranging his car service! He's made a huge mess and left rubbish and wires on the floor where my baby plays. He shoved all sorts of stuff in the recycling bin which I had to fish out otherwise the whole bag will be unrecyclable, even though the bin is green with a massive green sticker saying "recycle" on it. I was listening to radio 4 (woman's hour lol) and he said irritatedly "can I switch this rubbish off"!! Angry

The worst thing is he used our loo and peed all over the seat and the floor!! 🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢🤮🤮🤮

He's now slamming the back door over and over even though my baby is sleeping.

Aaaaah help me!!!!

In all honesty I'd have handed him a cloth and some bathroom spray and told him to clean his mess up. And maybe advised him to see an optician if he can't see well enough to aim.

CoffeeBeansGalore · 04/03/2022 14:07

Tell him to stop slamming the door. He needs to tidy up after himself & you want him gone by X time. And point out as a grown man he can clean up his piss in the bathroom.
Then tell your landlord he's got an idiot in.

He's about 75, looks like he should have retired long ago. Wondering if he has sight issues!

sounds like he's sorting the hinge....working in the wd40 or loosening it up?

You need to tell your landlord that he's using this time to organise his life (on phone ect) because i would bet that the landlord is paying him by the hour.

You can mention the pee on the seat and the rubbish left around.

Maybe ask neighbours for a recommendation for an alternative handyman and give that number to the landlord.

Been paid by the hour and taking the piss?

No, he left the piss. All over the bathroom floor 😄.

His age doesn't excuse that behaviour
TellMeMoreHellebore · 04/03/2022 15:15

I'm surprised we have a mumsnetter here allowing him access to the toilet

BlancheB · 04/03/2022 15:36

@TellMeMoreHellebore I don't think the poster was excusing it because of his age but that they lost any sympathy for the OP with their ageist remarks.

It sounds awful but there's no need to mention his age.

BlancheB · 04/03/2022 15:37

That should have been to @Susu49

Fuck this, no way.
Contact EA/landlord this is a joke.

I feel for u op. It is to do with age he is too stuck in his ways. Probably had a trade years ago got to old physically to do it for a living, no pension etc. so ergo probably paid by hr more than likely cash in hand . Your landlord doesn’t have a clue probably wants things on the cheap .

To anyone Who moans about what I have said experience and knowing people like this . He probably moans at his local pub with all the old boys over a few pints. I know his type.

Has he read his paper yet or gone off for materials?

I feel for you time for u to learn and get a book I recommend ‘Collins complete DIY manual’ Jackson day .

By the way he is probably a sexist pig.

My dad is 76 and his eyesight is nowhere near as good as it used to be he's also partially deaf so can be incredibly noisy, he also leaves more mess everywhere because he doesn't see it. He even left urine on my toilet seat last week which is not like him because I don't think he saw it so yes age can play a factor in a person's behaviour. Although the handyman sounds like he's stringing it out op to get paid more.

SoupDragon · 04/03/2022 20:08

That's not "male entitlement" it's simply "being annoying".

Daffodilsandtuplips · 06/02/2023 15:44

I sometimes wonder where some of these landlords get these ‘Handymen’ from. My daughter was living in a rented house, the dishwasher needed attention so she rang the landlord who sent his handyman round to fix it.
Two days later daughter was filling the dishwasher and leans onto the stainless steel sink drainer and gets an electric shock. My DH is an electrician, he tested the dishwasher and found it wasn’t earthed! The handyman wasn’t a qualified electrician.

Tamarindtree · 06/02/2023 15:51

Male entitlement?

One man in your home who is useless and you think his behaviour applies to all men?

What a rotten, stinking attitude to have.

My ex landlords handyman had a key and would just himself in. Always finding him inthr kitchen or on the landing.
