Too much alcohol?

FuckThatBullshit · 03/03/2022 16:42

10 bottles of sparkling wine (8 units per bottle) over 10 days, but 4 nights not drinking at all so the equivalent of a bottle a night, but not spread out that evenly. For the record this was last week only due to a holiday / annual leave. The person (not me) usually drinks 2 bottles of wine on a Friday or Saturday night and nothing more.

Well I could easily drink that over a 3 day weekend! Surely it depends on the person? Why do you ask? If it's not a common occurrence then surely it's a none issue?

SoberSerena · 03/03/2022 16:46

Yes, that's too much alcohol. But then, there is officially no safe level of alcohol to consume, so not sure where you draw the line really. People who drink frequently say anything from a glass of wine a week to a few drinks in the evening is 'normal'. Seems as if people make up their own rules on what normal drinking is!

I'd say that's clearly a lot and government guidelines clearly state a lot less than that as a maximum

Way too much alcohol for anyone!

Far too much

FuckThatBullshit · 03/03/2022 16:50

Just wasn't sure if it was something to worry about really or if it was something to mention. 10 bottles of wine over not much more than a week is obviously terrible but it's not EVERY week, only probably 3 weeks over a year during holidays where people tend to relax the rules etc.

You could really drink 10 bottles over 3 days?! To yourself? I like a drink but that's way too much even for me. Or maybe you mean a bottle a night?

I dont think the OP is that bad though. I mean, it's not great but it just seems like someone letting their hair down on a holiday from work. If they normally only drink once a week and will go back to that once annual leave is over then it's not the end of the world. Also they had 4 days not drinking which would allow their body to recover a bit

MrsBerthaRochester · 03/03/2022 16:55

Not a lot in my book. I could easily drink two bottles of prosecco in a sitting. On holiday I suspect I would drink a lot more than that.

NutCheeseBag · 03/03/2022 16:56

It would be too much for me. I was embarrassed by having to admit to drinking a bottle a week when I was in hospital (for something unrelated) last year and decided to give up so I wouldn’t have to be embarrassed in future.

I could drink 3 bottles a day. Yes. Not all the time and rare. But over a very boozy weekend to drink that much. Starting drinking at dinner having food and carrying on into the night? Or maybe mix it up a bit with some spirits and mixers.

Thought I was alone!

I think the scary thing is people underestimate how quickly a bottle of wine can disappear. It's only 3 glasses, easy to sink 2 just with dinner alone.

I can fit half a bottle in my wine glasses 🤣
Thatsplentyjack · 03/03/2022 17:05

Yes that's far too much. Bit this is MN where people drink that on their lunch break so......

Only because glasses now are massive!

If it's a one off for a special occasion then it's fine. Every week? Got a problem.

It depends on how you present it a bit and how much you drink the rest of the year when not on holiday.

Thirty bottles of wine over a year doesn't sound as bad as a bottle a day for ten days.

It would be a lot for me because I'm not a regular drinker anyway, I'd be quite hammered after a full bottle to myself and my behaviour would reflect that I'd be hung over during the next day and ill. My sil though, would easily drink a couple of bottles a day to herself on holiday around the pool during the with the kids and wouldn't be drunk and drink even more on an evening, but she's a regular drinker and is the pub every weekend and drinks a glass or two daily also so your amount is a lot to me but wouldn't be to her. Like a pp, sil would easily sink ten bottles to herself in a three day weekend and usually does.

Do the other people you're on holiday with drink a similar amount? Is there a reason you're wondering if it's a lot?

Oh here?! What threads are you reading? You aren't allowed a splash of wine in your spag bol normally without being labelled a drunk.
DressingPafe · 03/03/2022 17:14

What I don't understand is why people use massive glasses then put a cm of wine in the bottom! Then they somehow make it last all evening! It's clearly some kind of sorcery Grin

I don't think it's a big deal if it's just on holiday. if you said something to me I'd either laugh it off or tell you to mind your own business, depending how close we were!

NopeNoNope · 03/03/2022 17:22

And on any alcohol thread you'll have people say "watch out for the thimble at Christmas lot" but there's also the opposite end type of poster who minimise daily drinking.

Daily alcohol isn't always the sign of a problem but sometimes people who feel themselves struggling to not have that daily alcohol have concerns minimised by other people who drink daily. Every now and then sil will do a detox thing or try to cut back and her friends will actively try and spoil her attempts at reducing her usual amounts and say she's a partypooper.

Everything in moderation and all that I suppose.

RichardMarxisinnocent · 03/03/2022 17:25

People drink 3 bottles of wine or prosecco in a day??! Pretty sure I'd either be in hospital with alcohol poisoning if I drank that much, or at the very least would be very very ill the next day and probably the same day to.

I am currently a bit of a lightweight drinker though and on a night out would have 2 or 3 gin and tonics or cocktails, or if drinking wine half a bottle or most likely less. That said, I'm not one who thinks a thimble of wine is too much. I have been a student and used to drink more in the past, my max then was probably a bottle of wine, followed by a small beer or two, which to me seems a reasonable amount every so often if you want to get drunk - it's a binge drink yes, but doesn't seem a ridiculous amount.

LondonQueen · 03/03/2022 17:39

2 bottles a night is very easy, like you said it's only 6 standard glasses. My wine glasses fit half a bottle in so over dinner I can easily drink 2 bottles. This is mumsnet so if you have more than a glass of wine at Christmas, you're a raging alcoholic, guess I need to check into rehab!

liveforsummer · 03/03/2022 18:07

Well if it's an once off because of a holiday etc then I don't see the big deal. It would be too much for some people and not for others. 10 days of a bottle of wine in isolation is not enough to cause long term harm

250ml isn't a standard glass of wine, it's a large glass. Standard is 175ml surely?

How often are you drinking 2 bottles of wine with dinner? Every so often, fine, a few nights a week I'd say yes you do have a problem. Even if you're not alcohol dependent, you will be damaging your health.

liveforsummer · 03/03/2022 18:14

Well it's standard for me, also at home we don't carefully measure
