Teething or something else ? Advice please

My little girl has just turned 1, two days ago she was very unsettled, not herself at all, yesterday she went to nursery, they rang me to say she had a slightly high fever and she was very lethargic and not herself.

I picked her up and treated her symptoms with calpol, fever went down but she wasn’t herself and was pretty sleepy. She had a 3 hour nap middle of the day (this was the only nap she had)

Just wondering if any one else has experienced anything similar to the below or if something else may be happening. My lo already has 7 teeth.

  • sharp point in top of gum ? Looks like molar eruption but only a very tiny sharp bump to start with, would have expected a flatter surface for a molar ?
  • fever of approx 38, goes down with calpol
  • not herself
  • being fussy with food (not usually like her)
  • doing a sucking motion on the side of her gums, she also bit her tongue yesterday whilst she was doing it
  • her mouth seems to be really irritating her

Everything makes me think teething but she just isn’t herself, I know that can just be because she is having interupted night time sleep and she is in pain so feels rubbish, but it’s just the tiredness etc that goes with it ? All her other teeth have come through with a lot less symptoms

We have just had a similar experience with my 2 year old who has just started nursary. He's teething but we also found ulcers in his mouth. He has hand foot and mouth.

@keeponsmiling2019
How was the hand foot and mouth diagnosed ? I did think of that but I can’t see any ulcers etc in her mouth on her body etc

The nursary diagnosed it. It's extremely common in nursary setting. Takes 5-7 days to appear. I think most children get the spots or rashes (check Google images) but my DS has got the ulcers in his mouth only so we did realise.
He started teething symptoms Saturday afternoon and a few tears at bedtime and a bit off on Sunday, then Sunday night he woke screaming and I can only describe it like he was possessed. He was screaming and writhing in agony. He can't talk yet but it seemed like he was pointing to his teeth. It was a horrendous night. He was ok monday so we went to nursary and when we collected him they said they can see ulcers in his mouth and he has HFM as do 3 others that day. Monday night was horrendous again but after a long nap yesterday he woke much brighter and is eating and drinking well

Oh bless him, hope he is on the mend now, sounds horrendous for him and you !

I’ll keep an eye out for ulcers

Keep an eye, teething goes for aaaages so it's completely possible that she could be teething and have a little virus. Lethargy is something to take her to the doctors with if it doesn't improve in a day or so and she's sleeping a lot (obviously it's different if she's tired in the day because she isn't sleeping well at night).
