How many beads in a jar?

Wise mumsnetters is there a way of working out how many beads will fit in a jar? I want to make a weight loss jar system where you move the beads from the "need to lose" jar in to the "has lost" jar. Each bead representing 1lb. BUT I cant get to the shops so was going to order jars and beads online. So if the beads are 4mm how many ml does the jar need to be if I want to put 34 beads in there? Or alternatively if I have a 750ml jar how big do the beads need to be so it is almost full?

750 ml for only 34 beads is quite big; you’d need beads of 3 cm diameter. For 4 mm diameter beads you’d need a tiny 2 ml test tube.

Good luck - it sounds like a really nice, visual tracker.

I’d buy chunky beads 1cm diameter and get a 40-50cl jar. I think that is about right, but it will be quite easy to check the measurements when you’re dealing with 1cm diameter.

Thank you I'm rubbish at visualising sizes if I cant touch the thing. DS has a massive photo collage on his wall that is basically half the size of the wall as I cant do sizes. 🙈 I'm thinking of doing marbles instead of beads as DS had loads he doesnt play with so now just to work out the size of the jar. I do have some jam DS has nearly finished so I might get him to finish it so I can practice with that one first.

Marbles and a jam jar sounds like a good combination to me!

Apparently a standard marble is 1.3cm across. I think most jam jars are a bit less than 400ml, so might be a bit tight but close run thing, based on my rough estimate. Let us know when you’ve tried it!

I’m quite taken with this idea. Very visually motivating. Grin

These jars are a bit big but you kind of get the idea

You need the wisdom of crowds OP; take photos and ask lots of people.
