Smart Meters and billing query

My dd is renting a house that has a smart meter. Please could someone let me know how often British Gas send bills. On the website there is an option to pay a fixed amount monthly, but how does that work if there is more or less usage?

British Gas customer on a smart meter here - they send statements on use every quarter.

I pay a fixed amount by direct debit each month. The first fixed amounts were set up when I joined - they do a quick assessment of how often you’re in the house, what your heating and hot water systems are etc. The statement at each quarter then sets out your usage and tells you whether those payments are too high, too low or just right for and recommend adjusting accordingly.

I tend to use less in summer than in winter so tend to ask them to keep my payments the same in summer to give me some credit for higher usage in winter months.
