How much do they get paid for standing there while it all breaks out around them?

Their salary, which is individually negotiated. So the more senior the reporter, the more they'll get.

But yes there can be additional payments for either danger or hardship. And because going to a conflict zone can void insurance (as is staying in one when it was possible for you to leave), then the companies will undertake to pay up if your insurers don't (or at least they used to). I don't know what is on offer either for rehabilitation or long term care (if life changing injuries occur) or as a bereavement package for family
