Where to go in UK for 30 somethings family with kids , likes city break and creative minded

For a birthday surprise for my partner, he is not interested in historical sites etc. he loves places that inspire creatively. He would love to go to a Scandinavian country but my budget is low. We haven’t travelled much in UK but wondering if any gems we should try.

Have you been to Glasgow? That strikes me as a creative place.

No we haven’t been to Glasgow but will look into it thank you for idea :)

Bristol. Brilliant city for creative families. DC love spotting all the Banksies and other amazing street art. There's a great science museum, river buses, SS Great Britain and a pirate ship. Clifton Bridge is cool lit up at night. If DC are daredevils, I'm told there are amazing mudslides on teh Bristol side of the bridge. The playparks are great. There's a park with a tower you can climb, loads of little galleries, indie restaurants etc. My DC adored it. Family show at the Old Vic would also be great fun if they are showing something suitable.

What do you mean by "inspires creativity"?
Some places we've been:
York - especially if you like trains
Chester
London -absolutely loads to do
Birmingham - good museums
Manchester - if you like football
Cardiff - Castle, museums
Liverpool - boat trips, lots of museums, the Beatles

How about staying in or near Portmerion in Wales?

It is but it’s one great big historical sight which is the one thing he’s not interested in!

Inverness? Not the biggest city but a bit of a gem, and the highlands surrounding it are stunning.
