Has anyone used hypnotherapy for weight loss?

And most importantly, had success with it?

Genuinely not asking for myself, but someone close to me who is really struggling with her weight. She's tried so many diets, methods etc over the past few years and is only gaining more weight after initial loss. Comfort eating and binge eating. 5ft 3 abd 16.5 st.

I had wondered if it might help, didn't like to suggest it but she brought it up herself recently.

That's interesting @CormoranStrike.

We did chat about other forms of therapy, as similar to a PP , she knows how to lose weight, just doesn't do it. And really does binge on occasions.

I think possibly some other way would be better, I just don't know what.. Sad

Well, had the first proper session today. I was worried at one moment that we were heading in the direction of RolyPoly’s dark encounter, but we didn’t and all was well. I did also have a little cry, but I can’t get through an RSPCA appeal or an episode of 24 hours in A&E without blubbing.

It’s probably a bit early to tell if it’s done anything… but have managed the rest of the day without eating my body weight in biscuits!

It was just relaxed talking with my eyes closed really. Asking questions and making suggestions, but I did feel good for doing it. Knowing what I need to do, but not doing it is really similar to me, OP and also a bit of binging. If your friend might be open to it, OP… couldn’t hurt… (apart from her wallet).

Thanks for the update @TakeMeToKernow. How many sessions will you have? I used hypnotherapy to give up smoking and it worked very well but I'm not sure its the same! After all you can't just give up eating can you. And there are often some heavy emotions/underlying issues with being overweight

I will mention it, but it was actually a "concerned family member" thinking of offering to pay for it so not sure how will it would go down.

Good luck, I hope it helps.

I had a couple of sessions years ago to help with my chocolate addiction. It worked - until dh, who worked for Mars, brought home some boxes of Galaxy caramel which Mars were trialling at the time!

I have a friend who has lost 3 stone in the last year - she watched some hypnotherapy YouTube videos apparently so no costly sessions.

Yes was one of the first things I ever tried, complete waste of money.

I've just come across this thread.
@TakeMeToKernow how did you get on in the end? I've been debating this to help curb my overreacting...

Hiya Ohrwurm. Over reacting or overeating? I think it could help with both 😁

I had three sessions (well, four if you count the initial get-to-know-you session). Has it “worked” to fix things? It hasn’t for me. BUT did I find some benefit from it? Absolutely. Regret doing it? Not at all.

It was worth doing just for the affect on me for the first week after the first session… it was AMAZING! I consider myself fairly sceptical and I don’t know why it worked, but for a week after the first session I was a different person! Not just in my eating, but I generally skipped around in a flipping elephantine manner feeling amazing. Then something happened at work and -bam- it was undone. But I’m glad that, just for a short while, I’ve experienced being free of this stupid binge eating thing and i know that it is possible and achievable. The therapist was fabulous and I think has had really positive results with others and if you’re in the East Midlands I’d be happy to PM you his details.

The subsequent sessions didn’t have such a striking effect, but were still really helpful in just processing what’s going on with me. My next step is going to be to see my GP as I’ve concluded that this isn’t a weight issue, it’s a mental health issue. I don’t know what I expect from a GP, maybe CBT?

I hope you find some help that suits you!
