Box room help!

I'm redoing ds 14 room over half term. He's got a standard size small box room but does have a large floor to ceiling cupboard for a wardrobe.

He currently has a bunk bed, a book case and one of those IKEA box things with 3 large tubs and 3 smaller ones in a rectangle.

I have a double bed and a single bed in the loft that I can get down. He needs a desk for a his PC. I looked for desk beds, but he's 14 and 5ft 7 already. I don't know if one of those beds are suitable for the long term. You can't be 17 in a desk bed and I haven't got money to waste.

Any smart ideas of how I can make it nice but also grown up enough to last for the next 4 years and into adulthood please.

What are the room dimensions?

AThroneOfLies · 19/02/2022 16:11

No idea but marking place as I’m struggling too!

I don't know the dimensions. It's the average size box room that you have in most 3 beds.

I had no clue how to do this for DD so I ended up in the box room Grin However I’m single and she understood that I’d have to keep my clothes in the built in wardrobe so would need to be able to access those without a strop!

I could not keep my clothes in ds bedroom. Teenage boys are smelly no matter how many showers they have Envy well mine is!

We have a double loft bed in ours... (basically a double bed on stilts!) With a box case, storage unit and desk underneath, so her room is sort of on two floors. But it wouldn't work for a six footer!

If a new bed is within budget, and the room is wide enough look at asmall double ottoman bed. Narrower than a normal double but a lot more space for a tall teenager. Loads of storage underneath.

Is there space to have a small desk next to the bed, and use it as a bedside table as well? IKEA desks are good in that you can design your own with different sized surfaces and choice of legs/drawers/cupboards etc.
You could also have storage under the bed even if it's not a mid sleeper - either one with built in drawers, an ottoman (you can get side-opening ones) or just boxes on castors underneath. You could put shelves above the bed if you end up without floor space for the bookcase.

I did this for 6ft dc last year. Had a carpenter adjust a bunk bed into a single bed to fit into shortest length of room, bed end also removed so slightly extra room. Slightly higher than a standard bed so plenty of storage underneath.
Bought a long chest of draws (3+3) from m and s. Which means dc can have TV etc on top of draws and then has a small desk at end of draws. It works well.

I think I'm going to go for the furniture arranged like this and put a desk and shelves on the wall. Not sure whether to put single bed back as it would look better, but then if his mates stay over they will be a faff around a blow up bed ect.
