Calm an emetephobe?

thaegumathteth · 18/02/2022 20:20

Ds has eaten 2 pancakes at his grandparents house which are the sweet kind in a plastic pack that are meant to be refrigerated and then microwaved. They are in date but have been out of the fridge for a week.

What's the chances he'll get food poisoning? Please be kind, I battle every day with this fear.

Ingredients are
Water, Wheat Flour, Sugar, Egg, Palm Oil, Whey Powder (Milk), Dried Skimmed Milk, Flavouring, Coconut Oil, Spirit Vinegar, Preservatives (Potassium Sorbate), Salt, Emulsifier (Sunflower Lecithins)

Almost zero I should think.

Karwomannghia · 18/02/2022 20:37

He will be fine. And if in the unlikely scenario he's not he will just vomit once or maybe twice then be right as rain.
You have no reason to worry. Repeat: you have no reason to worry

Iamanicepersonreally · 18/02/2022 20:37

Wow.

FurryGrowler · 18/02/2022 20:39

@Iamanicepersonreally

Wow.
Unhelpful.

Totally and completely unhelpful and unnecessary

RoseRedRoseBlue · 18/02/2022 20:39

@Iamanicepersonreally

Wow.
I know.
makingitalladdup · 18/02/2022 20:40

Sorry - sent too soon!! Almost zero, I'm sure he will be fine. I understand your panic, I know how horrible it feels but your DS will almost certainly be completely fine.

Have you tried CBT or similar to help you? You can recover from this with the right help.

JengaCupboard · 18/02/2022 20:40

I’d also say practically zero. Don’t worry. I feel your anxiety also.

Silverswirl · 18/02/2022 20:41

Most likely he will be absolutely fine.
How old is he? Has he been sick before or does he get upset tummies usually?

FurryGrowler · 18/02/2022 20:42

Op I am emetephobe and I understand the fear.

Firstly, it's not meat. Or anything that really must be cooked before consumption.
That's really important.

I absolutely think that this will be okay. Probably more bleurgh tasting due to coldness rather than actual anything else.

Please try not to worry. I honestly think it'll be okay 💕

thaegumathteth · 18/02/2022 20:43

People saying wow are just being arseholes for no reason.

Thank you to everyone who has been understanding - I'm on a waiting list with a mental health team. Hoping it works!! I do actually control it fairly well most of the time but sometimes I don't.

Sometimes I read on here about people being worried about things I don't even think about but I either try and reassure or just scroll on. Mainly because I'm not mean to people who are already struggling.

Sorry I should've said they were microwaved. It's just that they had been kept out the fridge for a week.

I don't understand posters who make unhelpful comments unnecessarily when they clearly aren't emetephobic or indeed empathetic to the op.

It's unpleasant and unkind. It baffles me.

FurryGrowler · 18/02/2022 20:46

Op. I do think they'll be okay. I really do.

TinaYouFatLard · 18/02/2022 20:47

I really think he’ll be fine.

Notwithittoday · 18/02/2022 20:50

We’ve had this and it’s been fine

Brightandyoung · 18/02/2022 21:14

@thaegumathteth
I very much doubt he’ll be ill with those ingredients.

But please, please check out The Thrive Programme. They do a specific course for emetephobes and it totally cured me. The methods have also stopped my daughter from developing a full-blown fear before it started.

Don’t wait for the mental health referral - it will be ages and this is a very specific fear that needs specific treatment. The Thrive Programme is about £45 for the course. It will change your life. And I don’t work for them! There are testimonials from emetephobes online if you search.

(P.S. as a side effect, my fear of spiders also disappeared!)

BlipBlopYourNipNop · 18/02/2022 21:45

@Brightandyoung does it involve any exposure?

I have been offered therapy for my emetophobia but it involved a form of exposure therapy and I couldn't even consider it!

OP I know the fear and anxiety you are feeling from this and for what it is worth I think the chance is absolutely tiny that DS will be ill with those ingredients and circumstances.

It is a horrible phobia, I am on medication for general anxiety and it has helped my phobia to a very small degree. I wouldn't even get on public transport before in case someone was ill. It can effect every aspect of your life.

ImInStealthMode · 18/02/2022 21:47

The chances are almost zero OP. I don't think it would even occur to me to keep that kind of thing in the fridge (I'd consider them similar to those 'take and bake' rolls, we keep those in a basket on the side) x

Rekorderlig88 · 18/02/2022 21:49

Another emmetophbe here I get you completly.
I am in a state tonight as my 5 year old said she had a stomach ache before bed.
Thank you to whoever linked thrive I'm going to look into it

thaegumathteth · 18/02/2022 21:49

Thanks @Brightandyoung I'm off to google!

Notanotherwindow · 18/02/2022 21:52

He'll be fine. They'll taste like crap but won't make him ill, I shouldn't think.

Brightandyoung · 19/02/2022 18:19

@BlipBlopYourNipNop

No, no exposure! That’s why it’s so good. It’s about challenging your thinking styles and changing your beliefs. I was sceptical and didn’t think it was working at first but now I am 99% cured. It crosses my mind sometimes but I can talk myself down from it.

You have to put the effort in and do the exercises, but if you do it honestly works.

People who don’t have this have no idea how crippling it is.

pupcakes · 19/02/2022 20:50

Fucking idiots saying "wow" - clearly absolutely NO concept of emetophobia.

OP, I feel you 100% but am certain he'll be fine. It affects my life every single day so I absolutely feel your worry.
