Fuel costs!

Just filled up my car and only got 70 miles for £10 worth of diesel!!
This is crazy how on earth are those on average incomes meant to survive all this price rises on essential things?!

I know, it's terrible 🙁

My car will only run on expensive E5 even though it's no where near old.

Shade17 · 15/02/2022 16:55

That’s not likely to be the most accurate way to measure it but 14p/mile isn’t exactly crazy I don’t think.

oh tell me about, I had a voucher for nectar points if i spent £40 on fuel, just filled it up and didn't look at the pump to see how much I'd spent. Asked the lady at the checkout if i'd hit £40 and when she said it was £56 I nearly got her to double check it was the correct pump, but there was no one else in the garage at the time!!

@Shade17 I’m not saying it’s precision but £10 used to get me nearly 150 miles not that long ago!

Even at 60mpg that would’ve been around 2009 surely?

Moonopoly · 15/02/2022 17:13

@shade17 Nope really wasn’t. Fuel is at the highest cost it’s ever been! It’s not like I’m making it up…

I agree with you OP and it's due to rise again

Yes, fuel prices are at the highest they've ever been, just, but it's a very very long time since they've been less than half what they've been now.

In fact, prices have only just got back up above their highest ever. I remember paying close to £1.50 a litre for diesel from Morrisons years ago, it's at least 10 years since I've had a diesel car so it was before then. Otherwise like for like, you probably haven't paid half what prices are now for 15-20 years or more.

I do a daily 84 mile commute, public transport not an option. Cost is crippling. Alternative is to work from home with a laptop on my knees while 3 other people clatter about around me.

HollyBollyBooBoo · 15/02/2022 17:30

Your maths don't quite add up as it's not been half the current price for about 20 years but yes it's horrendously expensive.

nobody is denying that fuel is really expensive at the moment, just disagreeing with your maths/memory! For you to have gone twice as far "not that long ago" it would have had to have cost about 75p a litre. I started driving 15 years ago and it was definitely well over a pound then so your "not that long ago" must have been at least 20 years!

There was a brief point in 2016 where diesel dropped below a £1 p/litre (and it was very cheap, although not as cheap, during the summer of 2020 when nobody was driving anywhere) so yes, you might have gone considerably further for your money, but to drive 150miles for a tenner you'd have had to be driving in 1995.

Shade17 · 15/02/2022 18:44

but to drive 150miles for a tenner you'd have had to be driving in 1995.

At 60mpg that would be 88p/litre so around 2009.

In the late 90s I think it cost about 10p/mile in a 1.2 hatchback, with inflation that’s about 18p in todays prices.

My thirstiest car currently costs around 80p/mile when used round town Grin

myusernamewastakenbyme · 15/02/2022 18:47

Its really scary...i literally try to only use my car to get to and from work now...its a 15 minute drive each way and that is costing enough.
