A friend and I were just texting about childhood memories and our Mums and Grandmas making recipes out of the Bero book. I dug mine out and the oldest one I have is the 35th edition which I think was 1987.
My friend sent a photo of hers. It looks ancient. No issue number. All recipes have drawings attached not photos.
Any ideas what year it may have been? Am going to try and attach a photo of the cover.

What a treasure! See if any suggestions come from the evening crew.

There was a thread about this a few years ago! Everybody posted photos of theirs. Maybe have a search and see if you can find it? I love the bero Cook book ❤️

I remember that thread. I discovered there was a recipe missing from my copy. It's a fairly recent edition and people were saying 'this recipe is great' and posting pictures. On that page in mine there's just a blank space Confused

Don't they bring back such lovely memories of the smell of baking when you were a child? My Mum used to tell me to choose a recipe out of the bero book to make for tea. Brings tears to my eyes.

Well there appears to be a copy for sale on Amazon for £30 which suggests 1953.

Will need to check mine. "Borrowed" it from DM when I left home. Sent pics of a kids recipe we made and she recognised it as from the book.

RaelImperialAerosolKid · 15/02/2022 07:29

My Bero book is from 1922 - it is the only 'heirloom' I have - still use the recipes.

MrsDThomas · 15/02/2022 08:23

I have my mum’s too. Late 70’s. Few pages missing though. I sent off for one a few years ago. Need to find that.

RedBonnet · 15/02/2022 08:30

My mam had the one in the photo and it's definitely 50s. I learned to bake using the bero book 🥰

SoupDragon · 15/02/2022 08:32

I love the Bero book! I don't bake much any more but it brings back such happy memories of Sunday baking. I bought my own copy just to get the almond biscuit recipe.

RaelImperialAerosolKid · 15/02/2022 12:40

Been inspired to dig mine out - 7th edition from 1929- has all sorts of how to use gas ovens advice.

@RaelImperialAerosolKid ..that's fantastic. Could I see a photo of the front cover?

RaelImperialAerosolKid · 15/02/2022 23:22

The second picture is the front - it possibly had another one but I've never seen it - lots of tips on teaching your daughters to bake.

Sgtmajormummy · 15/02/2022 23:41

I have that exact copy inherited from DM. Unfortunately I’m not at home to look at the date.
She had an even older version of the BeRo book that was falling apart, maybe her mother’s, but she got married in 1955 so I’d date that ^^ copy to the mid 50s.
The recipes in the book are basic, post rationing style and very heavy on the flour, obviously! I just keep it for the memories.

Mossstitch · 15/02/2022 23:46

I used to have that exact one😍, I remember the girl on the front and the pictures, i baked from it as a child. I'm early 60s. Was reminiscing about it to a friend a few years back and she bought me one for xmas, which was lovely of her, but just wasn't the same in colour🤷

Twinstudy · 15/02/2022 23:48

I learned to cook with my grandma's bero books! Thanks op, brought back some lovely memories :)

Sgtmajormummy · 15/02/2022 23:55

I’ve just looked at the link above and seen DM’s old version from 1954 (Grin ) and the one I inherited (in the OP) from 1963.

Whitefire · 16/02/2022 00:20

I have one from my mother in law's, I think some time in the 60's. Not quite sure where it is at the moment, as we have a lot of boxes of stuff from the house.

Grandadwasthatyou · 16/02/2022 10:15

Warm happy childhood memories for a lot of us.

This is my MIL's. We will be keeping it.

Rovinonmars · 16/02/2022 12:33

I have one at home from my GMIL. I will check the dates on it later on!

Catcrazy83 · 16/02/2022 12:44

Love my be-ro. I’ve got the 40th. Got it around the time I left home around 2005 I think. Going for £15 on eBay

upinaballoon · 16/02/2022 14:16

Mine was Mum's. It's the twenty-first edition. 1950s?? The picture on the front has a girl in a gym slip and a tie. Ooo, coffee kisses. Smile.

StandardPoodle · 16/02/2022 16:37

I would suspect that's from the 1950s - my Mum had one. Mine is later, 1980s. The milk chocolate cake recipe is my favourite!
