What's a reliable thermometer?

I have a braun in esr thermometer. It's probably about 12 years old now at this stage.

When I take a temperature reading I like to take it in one ear, then I go to the other ear, and then back to the other. I then take the average over the 3.

I find its giving me major fluctuations in readings from 36.8 to 37.9. Even within such a short space of time. I know temperatures change throughout the day but I think its a bit iffy.

Does anyone else experience the same with their thermometer?

I need something more reliable. What's a reliable thermometer.

Afraid this is a bit of a 'not answer' but might be useful.

When my DW was long term ill and in and out of hospital I asked one of the nurses if their (expensive) in - ear thermometers were any more accurate than our Braun. They said no, absolutely not. Presumably just more robust.
