Work rotas - is this normal?!

I've had to get a second job, it's in a coffee shop. The rota runs Friday to Thursday but you don't get the weeks rota until the night before!

So for the work week beginning 4th Feb I received it at 11:22PM 3rd Feb. I will have to stay up until this weeks is emailed to me, so I won't know if I'm working tomorrow morning (6am start) until after 11PM.

This is ridiculous, right?

@DDivaStar

I really don't understand the changing rotas, surely everyone would rather regular hours and re writing rotas must take ages. If its the same staff each week why not the same hours ?
I don't really get it either. It's all good giving people 1 Saturday on, 1 Saturday off or whatever but it would be nice to know that I work every Wednesday, Friday and Sunday no matter what.

not only is it ridiculous but not acceptable

contact acas about roots and they will give you advice on how to deal with this

otherwise have a chat with the manager in the place of work

Nope. I wouldn't be happy with that. I would be looking for another job where I worked the same shifts every week. I would be happy to cover holidays/sick leave but would generally want the same shifts every week. You have a life and need to plan normal life things.

I think it is standard for a lot of shit retail jobs and managers who are very disorganised.

I would find a new job if I were you. Employers will continue to serve up this rubbish while people suck it up. For a minimum wage job it's not worth the stress.

FWIW, a family member started a job with Tesco picking online orders 4 hours a day for 5 days a week. Every single day without fail they wanted her to stay on between 2 to 4 hours extra. After a few weeks she got fed up with the incompetence and left. It was completely their loss as far as I can see.

@Firn

Still waiting for the rota.

I really like the job so far, this is the only problem. I applied for so many places but nobody wants to hire someone who already has a main job.

What sort of hours/days are you looking for? Maybe we can suggest some ideas?
labyrinthlaziness · 10/02/2022 22:05

@Firn

It's an independent.

I've just text my manager and asked if I'm on the early tomorrow and she's immediately replied "haven't finished rotas yet"

Argh!

I would say I can not work tomorrow due to the late notice.

You can't be messed about like that.

Who is the owner - can you appeal to them for some sanity?

This is not true! Now you have this job just keep looking and get something better.
