It seems that RV's agent had access to her Instagram account and was selling the stories to the press and RV knew about this. Is that correct?

There was something about a photo of a group of WAGs in front of a restaurant. But I couldn't understand what that meant.

We don't know if the messages in the papers are all there are, but Vardy's lawyer claiming, in effect, that these texts are being taken out of context suggests there is more.

The texts that have been released certainly seem to imply that Watt was leaking to the press with Vardy's knowledge, consent and encouragement. That is certainly how I would read them, particularly the one where Watt suggests what they should do if Rooney says that Watt was leaking and it becomes obvious that she is right. It may be that evidence will emerge in the full hearing that paints a different picture, although at the moment I'm finding it hard to think what that would be.

The bit about a group of WAGs refers to the 2018 World Cup. A group of wives and girlfriends (actually all girlfriends) were photographed by the press when they went to a restaurant together. Messages have emerged that show Vardy tipped off the photographer (via Watt) without the other women knowing, then worried that the others might figure out that she was responsible when she suggested they went outside for a group photo and some of them spotted the press photographer. The photographer then asked Watt to identify the women and Vardy gave Watt the names.

Rooney accused Vardy of setting up this photo. In her Reply and Amended Reply, Vardy said she did not, "orchestrate the photograph…did not arrange for a photographer to be present… did not pass information about the group’s location in order to ‘stage’ a photograph…did not inform the press about the location of the dinner". Vardy has now confirmed through her lawyer that her statements about this photo are false.

Oops - that should be "mostly girlfriends", not "all girlfriends". As far as I am aware, Vardy was the only member of the group who was married at the time, but I may be wrong.

RV must be either mad or the thickest person on Earth. As well as the CR stuff she is now known to be untrustworthy by all the other women in that photo. Had she just left it after CR made her big reveal everyone would have forgotten all about it by now (it’s not like there has been nothing else going on in the world!)

Not keen on Vardy. I thought she was at fault all along. She is probably jealous of Colleen Rooney as she has a lot more money than RV. That's my take.

For clarity, the decision today does not appear to prevent Rooney taking action against Watt. It just prevents her from doing so as part of the libel case.

It's all rather fascinating to be honest. The twists and turns, the bitching, phones being thrown into the North Sea. It's like Dynasty but an education in the law at the same time.

Lying in a written statement damages her credibility and means the judge is less likely to accept her evidence. It isn't necessarily fatal to her case, but it certainly damages her position.

Coleen Rooney has no choice. She has to defend the case. If she doesn't, Vardy will get a default judgement, so Rooney will have to pay damages to Vardy and pay Vardy's legal costs. As for why Vardy doesn't drop it, she seems to believe that she will win and that the case will vindicate her.

I think it would be funny. Rooney would lose but would believe she was right. Vardey would win but people would know she was a liar. Both would be winners while being losers. Very appropriate.

@prh47bridge would you advise Rooney make a payment into court in the circumstances (am assuming this is possible in a libel trial? If not apologies as it is now over 20 years since I ditched my civil law career but always loved a payment into court situation and never understood why they weren’t more widely used!)
