Burglar alarm/deterrents what do you have?

There has been a spate of burglaries in our village and it has made me a bit paranoid (not that we are out or away v often, or have much to steal)

We have a cheap yale alarm that isn't fully fitted that we meant to install for ages.

We had a PIR sounder when people approached the path but we turned it off as we thought they were interfering with our WiFi. 🙄

Just wondering what you have and what makes you feel safe

I don't worry about burglaries - I rent, I don't have that much worth stealing, I have insurance. And they're so much less common than they used to be, people don't buy TV recorders down the pub like they used to! I used to enjoy watching that 'Beat the Burglar' BBC show, you can still find clips on youtube. They had good tips on basic security measures. But really, if someone is determined to break in they will. It's just about making yourself a less obvious easy target. And get insurance, up to date valuations of things, take photos, so if you are burgled you can replace things.

I have cctv that alerts my devices when it detects motion and a yale alarm. I don't know if it will deter anyone, but I live remotely and in my old house I woke up to someone in my house. I just want the advanced warning basically so I could hide/get outside until they've gone.

We also have CCTV attached to our devices.
Huge peace of mind.

Detectors that beep if people approach the house, security lights, burglar alarm and cctv cameras

IcicleIcicle · 04/02/2022 16:29

Two dogs with barks a million times worse than their bites who sound like the hounds of hell if anyone comes within sniffing distance of our house. I seriously doubt they would actually be any use if someone was brave enough to break in so I guess I'm banking on the noise being enough deterrent between fear of getting savaged and the racket attracting attention.

Did people install the motion activated cctv themselves or is there a company that will come and do it all? I’d like it as I’m often the only adult at home and our house is detached and rural, so cctv would make me feel safer, but all the choice is a bit overwhelming.

We have some of Ring home security kit. It’s good and very affordable. You can pay for additional services with a subscription but we don’t need that at the moment.

IncompleteSenten · 04/02/2022 16:36

Good locks and 24hr CCTV recorded to the cloud. Someone is always in the house.

Also we have nothing of value but they wouldn't know that until they'd come in.

They'd probably feel sorry for us and leave us a few quid 😂

We have Eufy Cameras. They're often in Amazon Deals. I like that they have an alarm on the cameras, and it also sounds on your Homebase in the house. So we set it so if someone comes in to the front or back garden between midnight and 6am, lights and sirens start going.

We recently had a couple of guys trying car doors down our street. They weren't bothered by cameras, but when they got to one where the siren went off they did a runner.

A very large four legged security system, who is 9st in weight and hates strangers. You would have to be certifiable to even think about messing with him!

LunaLoveFood · 04/02/2022 16:43

A big dog that barks very loudly.

Shmithecat2 · 04/02/2022 16:43

We're about to have this installed in our home.

Inspectorslack · 04/02/2022 16:44

A loud dog.

Who would probably lick them to death but they don’t know that.

hiredandsqueak · 04/02/2022 16:44

We have a dog that guards the house as though her life depended on it and barks at any movement that she deems is on her territory. We have to hope though that the bark is a good enough deterrant though as she is tiny and very friendly to anyone who I invite in even if she was barking and snarling seconds earlier as they walked down the path.

WhatHaveIFound · 04/02/2022 16:45

We have a professionally fitted alarm which is always set overnight and when we're away. Also PIR activated lights at the back of the property and a Ring doorbell.

foreverandalways · 04/02/2022 16:47

Ring doorbell...Verisure alarms inside and out back of premises....alerts on mobile if any movement....

Does anyone have recommendations for burglar alarm companies who cover South West London?
