Are they suitable for 10 year olds? The next step up from a glue gun? Easy to use? What do I need to know about them? Which one is good? Most importantly... how messy are they?

I bought DD one a few years ago, lots of fun easy to use

I got multi packs of the filament of Amazon in lots of colours and found lots of different ideas on Pinterest

Couldn’t tell you the make but there are lots of reviews on Amazon, I just picked one after reading their reviews to be honest

DH got me one of the cheap amazon ones. It was OK, pretty fun but it blocked after 2 uses and has never worked again.

I will say they are mostly grey imports which means they ship direct from China (or direct from China to a UK warehouse to you) so there's likely nobody checking that they conform to UK safety standards. Since you're heating up the filament it is potentially giving off noxious fumes. Not too bad if it's a one off but if you think she'll get a lot of use out of it you might want to try and source the items more carefully.

I think she will use it a lot, so that's a good tip thanks BertieBotts. I don't mind paying a bit more if it's a decent one.

Good fun but quite tricky to use. Lots of practise initially. Get plenty of refills. My kid made replacement baby Jesus and sheep that were lost from our nativity set plus numerous other stuff. Good for quirky bits and bobs if you have a creative child

You can get the cheaply on ebay- about a tenner or so. They are underwhelming
