Bad chesty cough 'super cold' - anyone else got it?

Lottapianos · 04/02/2022 10:57

DP been suffering for about 5 days now. Absolutely dreadful chesty cough, quite relentless at times. Very snotty nose, sore throat, no fever, eating normally. Had a negative PCR on Monday. Been taking Benylin ( the drowsy-making good stuff), Night Nurse, strepsils. Last night was the first full night's sleep he's had all week so that's good but the cough is still dreadful today

Any one else got similar going on and how are you managing?

Yes my DC has this. I’ve tried everything. Strpsils, glycerine blackcurrant sweets, inhalation of olbas, Vicks on soles of feet. They are now on steroids and antibiotics but I don’t think they are even helping. No fever just the relentless cough and (gross alert) snot so thick it looks like glue. But appetite fine. It’s a mystery. School attendance keep harassing me but how can I send them back like this? Definitely not Covid I’ve tested several times…..I guess it must be viral?

Phrenologistsfinger · 04/02/2022 11:11

Yes, am on my third week - just intermittent chesty cough and runny nose now. It wasn’t fun. Negative PCRs.

QuicklyGoSlowly · 04/02/2022 11:15

Yes my whole household has it and as I unfortunately have asthma it has knocked me sideways.
I've just got off the phone with my gp who has prescribed me some steroids as I actually cannot breath.

'Yes, am on my third week'

Oh good god, you poor thing. It's a really nasty dose. Did you go to see GP or just manage at home?

Babymamamama, that sounds like what DP has. Agree, no way your poor kid can go back to school like that, for the sake of themselves and everyone else

Best thing for suppressing a cough I've found is pholcodiene linctus, if that helps.

Littlegoth · 04/02/2022 11:50

Little boy ended up in hospital at the weekend on oxygen due to this bloody virus. We suspect he has asthma and it’s really hit him hard.

OnceuponaRainbow18 · 04/02/2022 11:51

Yea my DC are on week 2 of this, wonder if they need antibiotics?

Batfinkwings · 04/02/2022 11:53

DH has this, or something similar and it's horrendous! He's had it for over a week, and annoyingly had a terrible prolonged cough he'd only just got rid of before this one started.
He's passed this one onto me, but I don't seem to have the cough so bad. Although I am producing so much snot it's making me gag.

We've found really hot, steamy showers help a bit first thing in the morning. I don't have much advice otherwise but am passing on sympathy to everyone.
I might try the pholcodiene linctus, thanks @hellcatspangle

Yes, just started this week. Really chesty cough with phlegm so thick it gets stuck in my throat so I feel like i'm choking on it.

Runny nose, gritty throat but that's it.

Had Covid over Xmas and did a lft to check but it's not Covid. Feel grim.

Elzbells · 04/02/2022 11:55

Only thing helping is lots of hot sweet tea - even water itritates my throat

Mylee · 04/02/2022 12:46

Mine started just before Christmas, have had 2 weeks of antibiotics but just cannot shake it for some reason

Cherrysoup · 04/02/2022 12:54

Had it before Christmas, tore my intercostals from coughing so hard. Blow me, the pain was crazy.

Lottapianos · 04/02/2022 14:09

Jeez, lots of us going through the horrors. Hope it shifts soon and you all feel better x

PamelaDoov · 04/02/2022 14:12

Yep me, DS and DH all had it for the last 2 weeks, over the worst but still not better. Honestly I’ve felt horrendous, 100x worse than when I actually had covid.

Lottapianos · 04/02/2022 14:15

People, did you go to the GP or just manage at home? DP understandably trying to avoid running the gauntlet of the 8am same day appointment phonecall

We are all plagued with it too.

Jmaho · 04/02/2022 14:18

My 4 year old is coming up to 3 weeks with this. 2 negative PCRs and numerous negative lateral flows.
Has spent most of this week up all night literally coughing her guts up. Finally managed to get her seen at the doctors and she now has some Amoxycillin. We're on day 3 with this and she does seem to finally be improving but it's worse than anything I can remember with my other children. She looks so poorly

FeliciaMcAspieGreer · 04/02/2022 14:19

Our whole household has a terrible cold picked up from DC nursery. It's getting me down...how can we all be so bloody ill and not have Covid?!

Batfinkwings · 04/02/2022 14:25

The doctors won't see DH. They have said to keep an eye on it and let them know if he doesn't shake it off.
So he's just battling through at home with lempsip, night nurse & glycerine pastilles & the odd dose of Corvonia syrup.
I'm worried he's going to do himself some damage with the coughing! Poor you @Cherrysoup tearing your intercostal muscles does not sound fun.

rubyslippers · 04/02/2022 14:26

Yes! Also had in October
Finally after 9 days feeling better / having a course of antibiotics massively helping
Doctor gave me a telephone consult

SecretWitch · 04/02/2022 14:28

My whole family has it. Started with sore throat, headache and runny nose. None of us have had a fever but have experienced chills. We have all had negative Covid tests. Trying to recover with rest, fluids and lots of tea.

LefttoherownDevizes · 04/02/2022 14:34

Could it be whooping cough? The glue like snot/mucus is a symptom

Sounds awful

RedBonnet · 04/02/2022 14:35

I'm on week 5 😭 although the cough has all but gone this last week. Chest feels lumpy still with infrequent coughing. Haven't been to GP, just used lemsip caps and vicks.

On the plus side, my whole family have got covid except me. I keep telling myself the cold virus is fighting it off.

JTTWC · 04/02/2022 14:59

Yes I have it to! My children have had a nasty cough for weeks and a bit snotty. Negative tests also. I got it about Tuesday. My chest felt awful, sore throat, pain in back when breathing, headache, phlegm galore. I felt so ill last night I thought I had pneumonia. GP had no appointments today Confused

UnicorseTime · 02/02/2023 05:44

Yes - I'm trying to work out whether to try and get a gp appointment or not.

Don't want to bother them if it's "just a virus" but I'm asthmatic and doing my inhalers more and coughing up gunk at night.

I cant have this for 3 weeks as I work outside the home. I so wish I wfh.
