Hey!

Im thinking of getting a Bichon frise however ive researched they can have separation anxiety
I do work shifts so when family can't pop in she would be left alone until i returned

Any advice please???

I cant think of any dog that would be happy to be left for a long period of time.
What about a cat- lots of cats are ok on their own.

They are absolute little pets, so loving and lovable, very sociable dogs, everyone is their friend BUT do not do well on their own. They fret dreadfully. We have two dogs so can leave them together but not for any length of time. My brother and wife have one and they have to put her into doggy day care because she gets so upset she chews her paws and makes them bleed. Vet told us best dogs to get if they are going to be alone for lengths of time are boxers, but they might be too big a breed

I’m no expert but I don’t think dogs are a good idea if you can’t be with them.

Sorry but agree with pp, no dog wants to be left alone for hours. It's not enough for them to be let out to wee by someone who pops in, they need to be with someone in the main.

I have a rescue bichon who has serious separation anxiety, although it's got slightly better over the years. She'd attack her skin if left, causing cuts and bald patches, so we'd rarely leave her, even for an hour. Most dogs are comfortable left for up to 4 hours occasionally, not so with some bichons.

My advice would be not to consider a bichon unless someone can be with them all the time. Not all have separation anxiety but they might and they won't cope with the stress of being alone. Whatever dog you get, consider doggy day care or a dog sitter, it's not fair to leave a dog for long periods of time.

Thanks everyone
Think you're all right and have good points
Ill have family and friends going in most the time but will have days Understandably where they can't so maybe Bichon is not an option

I also have a friend who has a Bichon. Lovely little dog but says she has terrible separation anxiety and they have to take her everywhere, if it helps.

All dogs do not want to be left alone for too long.

Don't leave any dog for hours at a time especially a puppy.Weve got an adult dog and a 3 month old puppy and they're never left for longer than 3 hours max.
