What's the coolest wedding you've ever been to?

Whilst I thoroughly enjoy all the bitchy threads about child-free weddings, expensive hen nights and money poems, it does get a bit tedious. So I thought I'd ask about the coolest wedding you've been to.

When I was little, my friend from school was a bridesmaid at her aunty's wedding. It was 1975 when the Bay City Rollers were huge. Most bridesmaids at the time wore purple polyester bridesmaids dresses, but my friend's aunty had all the little bridemaids dressed up as Bay City Rollers! They had the trousers and the scarves around their wrists... it was so cool at the time and I've never forgotten it.

I am sure there are some more recent examples of cool weddings, so over to you, Mumsnetters!

Friend's wedding celebration last summer (they'd had a v small covid wedding in the winter). DJ was a friend, there were kids. One lovely touch was that the bride and groom were serving some of the food from behind the counter - as they said, it was a great way of ensuring they spoke to everyone...

Definitely the more relaxed ones. It's not even about 'themes' and styles, just the general vibe from the couple.

I do find that those who go out of their way to be 'cool' are generally the most dull...

My own. Although the marriage didn't last, I had two amazing weddings - a civil wedding followed by a church wedding several months afterwards. Both were brilliant.

Mine!
In an old cinema, got married on the dance floor with our guests to the sides of us rather than behind. Spotify playlist kicked in immediately as we were wed. Drinks and very short speeches, buffet food then 1950’s cinema girls serving ice creams.
Disco lighting with again Spotify playlist I had prepared played and we danced til the end (we also swerved tea/coffee and wedding cake at 9:30pm)

A December wedding in an ancient Church in the hills above Barcelona. It was cold but brilliant sunshine and blue skies. The brides family were very well off and the reception was lavish. I was a guest with a group of late 20s friends, none of us had children, it became a long weekend away in Barcelona. Absolutely amazing.

DH's best friend hired an entire Scottish castle for his wedding. It was in October, and already snow outside so huge fires lit in every room. Wedding breakfast was in the candle-lit baronial hall while a string quartet played. We slept in a vast 4 poster bed with velvet swags, and I was brought breakfast (while actually still) in bed, on a tray complete with silver teapot. I felt like I was in a costume drama and loved every moment!

Yes, the venue was beautiful and formal, but the celebrations were so relaxed and joyous. And the couple are still very happily married 18 years later. Just because a wedding costs a fortune it doesn't mean that there's any less love and happiness than at a cheap & cheerful wedding.

My friend had been engaged for years, and the wedding was more of a "formality" as they already have kids etc, so she just wanted an excuse for a party!
It was fab. She quite literally danced down the aisle at the venue they got married at, her brother did a hilarious reading that had everyone in hysterics, and then it was back to their house for a "picnic" style dinner and buffet. It was perfect because it was just so "them". They weren't trying to impress anyone or prove that they loved each other. They just wanted to have fun!

That wedding sounds like an absolute blast. It's amazing how a unique theme can make a wedding unforgettable. I remember attending a beach wedding where the couple had a Hawaiian luau theme. Everyone wore leis, flip flops, and even learned a few hula moves! It was such a fun and relaxed atmosphere. And speaking of memorable weddings, I recently stumbled upon some stunning photos from a friend's wedding on alinadelfinowedding.com. The way they captured the love and joy of the day was truly magical.

BBQ, unlimited mini golf and unlimited ice cream from the cafe the reception was held in.
