The Balmoral was wonderful when I stayed there a few years ago.

Have a look at similar threads on UK travel or Scotsnet boards, there have been quite a few, but I am sure people will respond to another!

The more upmarket shops are on George Street rather than Prince's Street, it depends what type of shop you're looking for. The new St James Quarter is quite good. Known locally as the golden turd due to the decorative roof design but don't let that put you off.

I'd recommend a wander down the Royal Mile taking it all in, also the Grass market (has an actual nice market most Saturdays), Victoria Street.

The underground tours (most famously probably the real Mary Kings Close) are interesting and pretty uniquely Edinburgh.

I love the Grassmarket area and a quick gelato from Mary's Milk Bar!

Look at Lothian Buses website to see how to get around.
Day tickets are a good buy.

As well as the old town Royal mile we have lots of nice walks
along water of Leith
Queens Park/ Arthur's seat
Up past the observatory on Blackford hill, great views over city

Beach at Silverknowes/ Cramond where you can walk out to tidal island
Portobello beach, lots of wee places to stop and eat

Any idea where you'd like to stay?

There's lots of hotels, bed and breakfasts and airbnb.
Even got a campsite at Mortonhall, not only tents and campers but it did have pods , shepherds huts and some static caravans for hire
