Can anyone tell me what this little box might be?

Stripping wallpaper from behind our living room radiator in preparation for the plasterer and I've just come across this little box under the livingroom windowsill that has wired coming out both sides.

The wires on one side go into the wall and the wires on the other go down under the carpet.

I have absolutely no idea what it's for, this flat seems to be full of wires that are pinned to the skirting boards and have been painted over with thick gloss.

I'll need to unpin the wire that runs down the wall to get the paper off but I've no idea what this box is for, if it's live and if we need it.

We had a full re-wire in September and these wires were definitely there before the re-wire.

Any guesses?

Can anyone tell me what this little box might be?

Well you said you didnt have a landline and seems that you do- you have internet through a BT line?

They will fit a new box, they don't look anything like that anymore.

I keep seeing people say 'we don't have a landline, no-one has a landline anymore it's not the olden days' and think 'but you've got broadband haven't you, nearly everyone has broadband and surely that uses a landline unless you're on Virgin Media' and they still say 'oh no we're not one of those old fashioned types who has a landline, only Aunty Mabel uses the landline to ring her sister, no-one under 50 uses a landline any more'.

And here we are Smile.

We dont use our landline but we technically have one free with the broadband/tv. We just don't use the telephone at all.
