Verbal Reasoning Question help please

Hi, I'm trying to help my kid prep for the 11+ exam and I'm stuck on a verbal reasoning question. I don't think the question gives enough information to solve it but maybe I'm missing something. Can anyone help me?

Number word codes:
What is the code for LIVE?
HIVE LIVE LIFT SIFT 1284 1256 3256

The multiple choice answers are: (A) 1284 (B) 3241 (C) 9239 (D)1256 (E)7249

Thanks in advance.

HIVE LIVE LIFT SIFT 1284 1256 3256

From this you work out which letter converts to which number (from the first word H=1 I = 2 V = 8 E = 4 )

Then you look at the letters in the word they want the numbers and work out which numbers they are from the sample words.

SoupDragon · 26/01/2022 08:46

Have you included LIVE by mistake with the sample words?

SoupDragon · 26/01/2022 08:47

I've looked at it more closely now and I think I'm talking utter gibberish 😂

That makes no sense! Maybe upload a photo of the actual question?

Redundancygirl · 26/01/2022 08:51

1256

You can see that there are two words starting in LI and two numbers staring in 12. Therefore 12 = LI.

There are two word ending in VE and two
numbers ending in 56. Therefore 56=VI

LIVE = 1256

dorkfink · 26/01/2022 08:51

you need to match the codes to the words & from that do the code for LIVE

NoHunGosh · 26/01/2022 08:51

If your post is correct then the answer is1256 LI=12, VE=56

SleepingStandingUp · 26/01/2022 08:51

Well A seems to fit LIVE

HIVE LIVE LIFT SIFT 1284 1256 3256

Li ve
12 84

Li ft
12 56

S I ft
3 2 56

But no code for hive

DaisyTheUnicorn · 26/01/2022 08:51

Yup it's a code one and usually 4 words, 3 codes and you can work it out by process of elimination but you can't with this one!

It could be a question error - email the book producers (I got a quick email from cgp the other day, they were fab!)

LittleSnakes · 26/01/2022 08:51

It’s 1284. Lift and sift end in the same letters. So they’d be the same numbers at the end. Which means L would be a 1.

Redundancygirl · 26/01/2022 08:51

Sorry 56 = VE!

DaisyTheUnicorn · 26/01/2022 08:52

Littlesnakes - normally the right reasoning but here Live and Hive end with the same letters too!

LittleSnakes · 26/01/2022 08:53

Oh no actually hive and live also end in the same letters.

DaisyTheUnicorn · 26/01/2022 08:53

Those pointing out the hive/live are missing it could be lift/sift and vice versa. There are 2 possible answers.

LittleSnakes · 26/01/2022 08:54

Cross post Daisy!

Redundancygirl · 26/01/2022 08:54

Oh yes or 56 could = FT!

DaisyTheUnicorn · 26/01/2022 08:55

We've all crossposted! I love these normally. My poor year 5 child not so much...

Estraya · 26/01/2022 09:26

Ok I feel better that most of you are seeing the same as me. LIVE is definitely included in the question, which I think must make it a question error. It's from an old 11+ card game so it's not worth emailing anyone about. There are other questions on the same card with the answer included in the list but they have enough information to work it out anyway. This was supposed to be one of the easier questions!

I'll explain that it's a mistake and maybe check the next ones before we attempt them together. I don't want to put him off!

Thanks!

Card game sounds a good idea. It's like wading through treacle here at the moment with mine. Elder child just took herself off to work thru the cgp books. Youngest needs someone encouraging them Every Single Step...

Estraya · 26/01/2022 11:05

Yes I'd like to try and make it a bit more fun. I quite like the maths and verbal reasoning questions. The grammar has not been my favourite...
