Paying builder/workmen deposits?

Just a quick one.

Been quoted just over 5k for some landscaping work. There’s some materials to be ordered but bog standard patio blocks etc with a 6w order timeframe roughly. Nothing fancy or specially made.

The builder can’t start until end of may/June which isn’t ideal but he seemed nice and came well recommended. However he wants a 30% deposit today to reserve the space for roughly 5 months time. Is this normal?

What happens if the company goes into liquidation or something happens that means he can’t do the work between now and then, would my deposit be protected or should I run a mile?

With building work is it usual to pay some sort of deposit? It’s been forever since I’ve had someone actually do work and none have ever asked before. I don’t want to sack him if the next one is going to ask for the exact same Blush

Pretty standard in my opinion. Usually the best tradesman are booked up for a few months.
The other option if you are worried is you buy the materials yourself. Can you pay via credit card ?

My brother and DP Are in the trade and both have card payment facilities
