Expensive things that we get cheap!

I get a massive thrill about buying things cheap from charity shops, Facebook marketplace or online auctions that I couldn't afford new, and wondered if anyone wanted to share their finds?

This is one of mine, £25 off Facebook marketplace but apparently Art Deco and worth hundreds. I struggle financially after a divorce, and have to keep to a strict budget, but little things like this make me happy

Love love charity shops!

Went shopping for DS yesterday as he’s ran out of all the clothes people bought for him when he was born. Got a pair of Jojo Mamam Bebe dungarees and a t shirt, a Petit Batau jacket and a pair of trousers, and a Jelly cat fox toy.

Total spend £8.50 Shock

On my birthday I found a silk Burberry skirt for £7 and a Kate Spade beanie for £5. The ladies in that shop price all the ‘nice’ stuff around that mark whether it’s designer or High st.

WheelieBinPrincess · 23/01/2022 16:20

Ooh OP what a find!

Pinkstegosaurus · 23/01/2022 16:25

Fabulous!
One of my favourites was a fully restored 1930’s singer sewing machine in the original box, converted from hand turner to electric - £5 at a car boot.
80’s Laura Ashley full skirted dress for £3 in a charity shop.
2 large wooden rustic desks that someone had put on the road with a ‘free’ sign on them - we knocked to check that they really didn’t want anything for them but no!

Hippywannabe · 23/01/2022 16:32

I got this absolutely immaculate lilac grey Mia Tui bag yesterday for £6. I danced outof the shop.
I also got a brand new Mango coat for £4 in the same shop.

We went to Peppa Pig World and DD really wanted the campervan set which was £40. It felt like a massive ripoff, so I told her we’d look online and I went on Facebook marketplace. Ended up getting a massive Peppa collection for £15. Peppa’s house, playground, spaceship… the woman who I collected it from said her grandkids were no longer interested, so kept pulling stuff out the cupboard saying ‘I’ll chuck this in for a couple of quid!’ It was the summer holidays and the haul kept her entertained for hours.

I’ve also had an expensive kids bed for £60 which retails about £450. Looked like it had never been used. Got a massive set of lol dolls for my niece for £20.

Other than real basics like leggings and pants I buy most stuff from charity shops. I like the excitement of finding new things. Vinted is great for branded stuff, although the postage can be a bit high if the seller doesn’t offer all options. Bundles can be especially handy for nursery type clothes that are going to get well worn anyway.

I have 4 cashmere cardigans all from charity shops and all for under a tenner each. My last was £3

I picked up a Dyson V6 absolute from FB for free. All it has cost is a new battery at £35 - I'm over the moon with it.

Lemonweightloss · 23/01/2022 17:08

@lapasion, I love your description of the Peppa pig haul. I'm imagining your dds sheer delight at such a treasure trove !!

hamsterchump · 23/01/2022 17:10

My favourite one is my Calvin Klein dressing gown, 50p from a jumble sale. It's a big men's one and so long and warm and comfy and after over 10 years it's looking a little worse for wear and has had repairs but I still love it.

DockOTheBay · 23/01/2022 17:22

I found a Le Creuset casserole dish in the tip shop for £4 and a cosy coupe car for £5 (just needed a good pressure wash).

tapdancingmum · 23/01/2022 18:36

I also got a Kenwood chef from the brownie jumble sale for £3.00. works perfectly 😀

Curlygirl06 · 23/01/2022 18:47

I got a black leather Harrods handbag for £5. My daughter, who is a handbag aficionado, confirmed it was genuine, can't remember what type of leather it is but it's something quite exotic! She's desperate to have it.

freesolo · 26/01/2022 18:12

I love all these! Such a joy.
I got a lovely vintage chair from Facebook marketplace yesterday for £20 which I think looks lovely in my back room ( and yes I know my curtains are too short, I want to get a panel added at the bottom so they reach the floor - the made to measure length which would have fit were far too expensive 😂)

Oh so many.

Polish hand blown candle holders for £1, go for £38 each on eBay.

Voyage cervino fabric 8 metres for £15, usually £25 per metre.

A John Lewis wool coat for £25. Was on sale at the time for £200.

Bloodybridget · 26/01/2022 18:48

That's a lovely chair, @freesolo!

ProperVexed · 26/01/2022 18:51

@freesolo Lovely curtains! Where did you get them?

freesolo · 26/01/2022 18:52

@Bloodybridget thank you! I love it.

Ooh I once nabbed Collectif Pearl swing coat on Ebay for £90. Its £250 to buy new. It was great condition. I got loads of use out of it for 18 months and then put it back on Ebay and old it for £96. So, 18 months of a beautiful coat and I made £6 profit Grin

I regret selling it every Winter. Of course.

Total bargain, Kenwood chefs, just go on & on, very well built. I love mine, enjoy.
WhatLiesAhead · 26/01/2022 18:56

Got dh a Paul Smith jacket for 50p at a jumble sale. It was in immaculate condition and dh wears it so much!

Notimetolive · 26/01/2022 18:57

What a timely post! I was about to buy an armchair for a spare room so I could have somewhere quiet to go and read. Had a look on line and was shocked that everything I liked was £800 or so. Decided that a ‘cheap’ one at £240 from Dunelm ‘would do’. Had a quick look on Marketplace and have today picked up TWO lovely, comfy, clean armchairs for just £30 the pair. Love the pattern and style and they are just what I would have chosen new, so I am super happy.

ClariceQuiff · 26/01/2022 18:59

I got a vintage clock a few months ago - found the exactly the same clocks on eBay going for £70 - I can't remember now how much I paid but it was under a fiver.

From the same shop, as it happens, I got a brand new looking Monsoon wool coat for £7.50 a couple of weeks ago.
