Changing name by deed poll

SassyPants87 · 23/01/2022 13:39

Basically it's a very long winded story but can I change my name by deedpoll and then change it again the next day?

I've tried to look online but can't find any guidance on it anywhere

It's not really a quick process - but easy enough. You fill in the form, pay for your certificate. When it arrives a few weeks later you use the certificate to change your passport/driving license/bank cards etc etc.

Nothing stopping you from changing it back doing the same process I guess...but again it'll take a few weeks.

But quite expensive for one day Hmm

Would love to know the back story for this

You could but there’s also caveats around what you can’t do a name change for.

TeaStory · 23/01/2022 14:00

You could, but I really can’t think of any reason to do it that wouldn’t be dodgy!

Also you don’t have to pay, it’s free.

@TeaStory haha it's not dodgy I can imagine it looks that way. Basically I'm getting married to a Sikh guy (I'm Hindu) we're getting married at his place of worship but they won't allow this until I change my name to have 'kaur' as my middle name to 'show' I'm Sikh. It's my civil wedding the next day and I don't want this name on my marriage certificate as it's not my name or identity and I'd rather my actual name is on my marriage certificate

I thought that you could be known by any names so long as it was not for fraudulent purposes.

You don't actually need a paid certificate to change your name (although some companies are funny about what evidence they'll accept), you just need to make a formal declaration - see here for more details: www.gov.uk/change-name-deed-poll/make-an-adult-deed-poll

You don’t need to pay for a deed poll.

I was robbed then as I definitely paid for one 😂

bcc89 · 24/01/2022 07:31

You don't need to pay for one. You can write your own deed poll (we got our wording online), print and ask two friends to sign it. Then legally you have your new name.

However, to get it accepted formally, you need to have some kind of ID in your new name, so I sent off for new driving license, gave it to work to change my payslip, then sent this evidence off to the bank to update my bank account. It took ages to have enough ID to use for a passport!

I don't know if you'll need more ID than just a deedpoll to get married for your partner's culture? If you do, it takes more than a day. If it doesn't, you're fine... I think?

If they are happy to take the deed poll as proof, then you can do it yourself as PP have said, then just shred it the following day! If they want you to get your passport etc changed, then I’m afraid it is good to take longer and you won’t be able to achieve what you want.
