Birthday Party Food

Due to lockdowns I haven’t had the opportunity to host birthday parties for my children but hoping to host a few this year. All the ones we have attended have had party food, so is it a faux pas not to have party food? What is the etiquette? What goes down well with kids under 7?

I’d say food is certainly the norm, although not necessarily a laid out buffet or full on meal. Some of it depends on the timings of the party. If you did a morning party finishing no later than noon you could get away with it. Or maybe just a snack.

As for the type of food, I’ve seen all sorts from text book party tea with sandwiches, sausages on sticks and crisps, to the child favourite meal, to Dominos. Pros and cons for all.

I think one of the benefits of the food is that it kills time and forces them to sit down for 10 mins. The tea is usually the quietest part of the party.

Personally I like the traditional tea (not too many sandwiches they tend to be less popular).
