Private School or State with Tutor

Really torn! Need to make a decisions for DD (10). She is quite average at school, has never struggled, a little lazy at times. She's not exceptional at any subject.

We have 2 options

Private School - which we can just afford

Or

State School (not amazing) with a tutor maybe once or twice a week.

What would you do?

If you can afford it easily then I'd go for private. If you only have one child, and family can help, it's not such a big risk. Personally I'm feeling quite pessimistic about the widening gulf between state and private schools, particularly post-pandemic. Even if your own child has escaped the anxiety and other mental health impact of lockdowns and repeated disruptions, it will have affected other children badly and probably more so in state schools than private. So it will be more likely than ever that an average/lazy child will get overlooked.

Of course there are some amazing state schools which are the exception, but it doesn't sound like your local one is one of those. I don't think a tutor can do enough to reduce the negative impact.
