Is this actually a jug?

I bought this jug in a charity shop for a pound and I really like it but can't work out why it has such a small opening and whether it's even a jug at all or if it's something else entirely. Any wise mumsnetters able to shed any light?

Is this actually a jug?

How would you clean it? It must be for decoration

GiveMyHeadPeaceffs · 21/01/2022 19:35

@Shapiro

I thought it was a pie funnel but if it has a bottom then it isn’t!

Could be one of Gwyneths vag steamers!

Isn't it an oil lamp? Meant to have a top stopper with a long wick?

OwlBasket · 21/01/2022 19:37

I was going to say candlestick but (most of) an oil lamp it is then!

Interesting!

Definitely a pottery oil lamp. I have one. Yours is missing a metal cuff and a thick rope wick.

BlackAlys · 21/01/2022 19:52

In fact, mine looks like it could have been made by the same potter - mine is reverse colours to yours though.

Oh an oil lamp?
Just the very thing when electricity is no longer affordable, op.

Ooh interesting development - an oil lamp! I wonder what I could buy to make it work as an oil lamp?

Name change fail?

I am not sure you'd be able to find a wick holder the right size but eBay is your friend for this! It's lovely, I'd try a candle in it but you'd have to take care not to let it burn down. I knew it couldn't be food as you'd never clean it!

@DobbyTheHouseElk

It’s a tagine isn’t it?
How can it be a tagine? it's obviously in one part or op wouldn't have thought it was a jug. Tagines have a base and a lid and some way of getting the food in. Confused
AdaColeman · 22/01/2022 15:23

Perhaps you could use it as a reed diffuser instead of lamp. It looks as though it would sit solidly and safely on its wide base.
