Does this sound like "exploding head syndrome"?

Last night, I dreamt I was sitting at a table in a school hall/canteen when there was a sudden WHOOSH and my perspective/consciousness flew out of the back of my head and away, I could see the dream scene from above.

In the dream, I thought my head had actually exploded and I'd died, maybe my subconscious remembered reading about EHS and created a dream narrative around it when it happened?

I woke up feeling so shocked but my heart rate was fine.

What's this ? Exploding head syndrome? I have no idea what that is but it sounds bizarre.... off to Google

I have exploding head syndrome and I always wake up when it happens, so I’m not sure whether you could incorporate it in a dream. It’s not very subtle.

Crinkle77 · 18/01/2022 17:52

I think I have exploding head syndrome and is usually accompanied by episodes of sleep paralysis. As @Footnote says I wake up when I have it but mine is more of a vibrating, whirring in my head. When I first started experiencing these episodes I thought I was having nocturnal epilepsy but after reading up I'm deffo convinced it's sleep paralysis and EHS.

I've only heard of it happening when people are awake, but I'm no expert! Sounds very strange though! Have you experienced it before?

flippertyop · 18/01/2022 17:55

Don't know what it is but it sounds horrible

ShowOfHands · 18/01/2022 17:58

Sounds like a dream.

I have this, it tends to happen when I’ve just drifted off to sleep or even in between sleep and awake. Its a normally a very loud bang or two which sounds like a gun shot going off right by my head. It can be alarming and makes me properly jump up out of bed. I’m not sure if that’s what you had, did you hear a bang?

Footnote · 18/01/2022 18:02

@Crinkle77 For me the vibrations are very strong and it definitely happens during the same kind of sleep as sleep paralysis does.

MerryPoppings · 18/01/2022 18:03

I have this. It's when you wake up due to what you hear as a loud bang. It feels very real and I can sort of hear the echo of the sound once I'm awake. Like someone has shot a starting gun next to your ear. I only get it when I'm stressed.

Yours sounds more just like a weird dream.

It was terrifying at first but now I know what it is I can deal with it.

I get this occasionally when drifting off but mines like a really loud gunshot and causes me pain and confusion for a minute of so.

Thank you for replies!

I'd not experienced it before, annoyingly I can't say for sure if there was a loud bang.

Probably a weird dream (certainly the weirdest I've ever had!).
