Yoto player - does anybody have one?

Thinking about buying one for my 5 year old son, but it's so much money and it's hard to tell if they're any good or not just by looking at the website. I'm kicking myself that I didn't just get one at Christmas. He has a bedtime story or two at night but isn't always ready to go to bed and I'm considering this as something that might be good for him. If you have one does your child a) like it and b) use it well independently? Thank you!

@Jemimapuddleduk does the music come with it or do you have to buy separate cards? I've fallen down a card rabbit hole!

My 5yo loves his, listens to it every night to go to sleep. We have all the Julia Donaldson books and this Xmas he got some of the Roald Dahl books which he is now loving! I preferred the yoto over the Tonies one because the books are on cards (same size as a credit card) so they are smaller and easier to store, my son has a wallet in his bed with all his cards in 😊

If anyone else wants a yoto referral code this will get you 10% off:

You can download the app before you buy it. You get some free content which changes regularly. If you download the app now you'll get to see what there is available (saved me buying a nursery rhyme card).

If you buy a make your own pack (they were out of stock when I did my order) then you can download the free content to a card. You can also add your own MP3s or make your own content from scratch.

There is a daily podcast and a radio station.

Other than that though if you want music you will need to buy some music cards.

The only downside for me is that they have a flat rate delivery charge under £30, which is frustrating if you just want to order a couple of cards which would cost almost nothing to pay out. Wish they'd offer free delivery (or a reduced rate) for card only orders.

I got DD (age 3) a mini yoto for Xmas, and we love it. We still read to her as I don't think it should be used as a replacement for being read to, but we listen to it when having breakfast, and on and off during the day. I also play the cards through my phone when we are in the car. She loves the 'extras' on the cards like the songs (one of her favourites is the Highway Rat song). We also love Yoto radio. It's been a really good purchase for us.

Scout2016 · 09/01/2022 10:47

Thanks for this thread OP, been wondering about the mini one for DD's 6th birthday. I'm someone who still uses CDs (and tapes) so all alien to me.

bluesky45 · 09/01/2022 11:28

We got one for my 4 year old for his birthday. He loves it! Yoto daily and the podcast are his favourite but he also enjoys stories and he listens to the radio on occasion.
He can use it independently and listens to it at "quiet time" in the middle of the day for around 45mins in his bedroom.
Would definitely recommend!

PinkestMoon · 09/01/2022 12:33

Right, I've gone for the main yoto player and if it's well loved I'll get the mini for when we travel. Thanks for all your advice everyone!

My nephew has one and it's quite well liked/used. He's two so it's just for short stories and child friendly music etc at the minute. It's quite robust and there's no insanely loud adverts when something ends on YouTube/risk of anything iffy.

We absolutely love our yoto. It's been with us a couple of years now and gets daily use. DS is obsessed with the Ladybird Advenutre cards. Going to be getting DD one for her birthday this year.

We have an up to date referral code if anyone is after one... prz.io/rzxAkJmt0

The Yoto has been great for helping my 4 year old get to sleep. He listens to a wide range of stories at night, but doesn't carry it round in the day listening all the time like some do.
My older child uses the app on an old iPod. I do like that they can both be listening to stories simultaneously with no extra cost. Recent hits have been Treasure Island and The Secret Garden.

The Yoto player is awesome. Especially Julia Donaldson and Roald Dahl cards! here’s our referral link to 10% off your Yoto player purchase ❤️

prz.io/Log9DkLTN thanks!

Benjaminbunnyslettuce · 05/03/2022 20:32

I have a link for 10% discount on an original yoto player or a spend over £79 (yoto mini with some cards).

prz.io/JGkGgO6T8

Some make your own cards are really useful and it can be nice to get family members to record themselves reading stories.

Mine really like the daily podcast and radio but topsy and tim/ Alfie/ Julia Donaldson are favourites with my 4 year old.

I’d also recommend the silicone adventure jacket as it really prevents it being damaged. Ours has been dropped down the stairs once and out of a bunk bed several times and is still fine.

ThreeLittleTykes · 18/03/2022 20:09

I honestly can't recommend it highly enough! All three of our kids love it. It's become a part of their regular nighttime routine, but it gets used all through the day as well. We don't like them watching TV, so wanted a way for them to listen to music and stories independently. And this has been a lifesaver! There is a great selection of cards to buy, but you can also make your own with their blank cards (which we did by making MP3s from a bunch of story CDs we had). They will honestly spend HOURS curled up with it. And they have learnt loads as well, as there are free podcasts you can link blank cards to. If you would like 10% off, you can use our referral code: prz.io/qOVmRrjT8.

You won't regret getting one! An unexpected bonus for us was that you can set the clock to change from night mode to day mode at a specific time. So our kids now know when it's ok to get up. No more 5:30 wake-ups for us!! You can also control the volume and what they are listening to from the App. We are big fans of it (can you tell?!).

RunAwayNow · 18/03/2022 20:42

Dd6 loves hers. Dd8 is always borrowing it and wants one for her 9th birthday! Yes they could listen to music on apps etc but we don't want them having phones and tablets in their rooms all the time. The Yoto is a great way for them to access music and stories without being glued to a screen.

Redlorryyellowlorryblue · 18/03/2022 22:33

@Muststopeating

If you join the Yoto club, it’s free delivery (no minimum spend) and you get 10% off everything. It’s £9.99 a month and you get to pick 2 cards, usually new releases a month out of a choice of about 5/6.

KBLondon · 31/05/2022 19:44

We love our Yoto! It is one of the best things we've bought for our (now) 5 year old. We bought it for her 4ths birthday. She uses it every single day.

Happy to share my referral discount of 10% off your first purchase of £59.99 or more 😊

Happydaysandhappysmiles · 27/06/2022 13:50

I appreciate that this is relatively old but would you buy one for a nearly 8 year old? We use Audio cd's every night but he also loves listening to podcasts and audiobooks via my library app on my phone. He will shortly be moving into his own room so his sister will keep the CD player. I am slightly put off by the cost of the cards....!!

Happycrocodile · 27/06/2022 14:46

Hi @Happydaysandhappysmiles, I would, my nearly 6 year old loves him and there’s loads of cards that will keep him entertained for years to come! He goes to sleep with it on every night and also listens to the yoto radio during the day. It’s got the added bonus that it’s a night light which changes colour for night and day so our child uses it as an indication of when he should be sleeping and in his room! (Whether he pays attention to that or not is another matter!!) I’ll pm you a code for 10% off x
