Having a very odd night. Stateside.

Have been the other side of the pond since prior to Christmas, visiting family.
On my way back home but in a rambling kind of way. Booked a motel in Florida to stay in for three nights. Was stupidly cheap which should have given me a heads up that it was to be avoided.
So arrived last night and noticed the toilet was not draining as it should. Left it as it was late and could not be asked at that point.
Was awake by half six this morning so phoned the front desk who said they would get the maintenance guy to have a look when he arrived.
An hour or so later, he arrives and brandishes a plunger at me, I step aside and let him get to it.
He plunges and then seems to think the job has been done.
Not so. I walk over to the front desk at around ten am and ask for them to provide me with some chemicals so I can sort the issue. They cannot possibly do that, the receptionist, who hales from Manchester, tells me she will get him to come over again.
Takes another hour or so but he gets here, plunger in hand. I tell him that it's not going to work as the blockage is obviously further down the pipes and could he perhaps throw some bleach down.
He starts acting like I am an oddball. But does go and get a snagger to clear the blockage.
On his way out the door, he tells me that 'I would have to be out of mind to put bleach down the toilet.
I probably should have just laughed at that point but the comment plus the two cockroaches I have seen have got me riled and I email the motel chain, with an outline of what happened and a few web links showing how actually normal it is to put bleach in toilets.
I go out and have a wander and grab some dinner and then when I get back I decide to post a review of the motel. Having done that, I read some of the other reviews and find the one I have screenshotted and attached below.
So anyway having found a couple more cockroaches upon my return (but armed with bug spray) I resign myself to having no sleep tonight and to booking a more salubrious establishment tomorrow.
And then at one am I start hearing rustling noises outside my door, I've seen a few feral cats around here and with the cockroaches, I am guessing it might also be a rat, so not overly concerned. I play an ultrasonic sound file for around ten minutes and then there are no more rustling noises.
A while later I hear what I think are two people coming up the outside stairs, while sounding drunk and laughing. Then I realise it's only one person.
Then this person is hanging around outside my door and starts talking, quietly at first but increasing in volume, sounds drunk, talks 'dont you worry your pretty little head, Mike's going to take care of it', volume decreases again, very glad I have been awake all night at this point, as would have been a bad way to wake up.
Fuck he just came back and banged on the air conditioning unit.
He talked about bashing the door in previously but then wandered off muttering about how 'he done fucked up'
Have my laptop and will be programming in 911 (they literally started offering the emergency call service TODAY)

Having a very odd night. Stateside.

Every word I have written here is true and accurate and I am having a great evening after a horrific night prior to this.
And 14.99 dollar wine (having just googled) for no money is vastly better than a kick in a teeth.
Thanks those who were there for me at 5am/6am EST, it was appreciated.
For the doubters, the report button is that way ^

@TheMagiciansNiece

Glad you've got it all sorted.

Just wanted to say that the expression isn't "can't be asked" but "can't be arsed". My DD thought it was asked and used it in front of people who were not impressed!

Well I would say "Sorry, but I can't be asked" if I said it at all! Are you sure that it didn't start out as "asked" rather than "arsed" 😄 and even if it didn't, why the heck does it matter? Why are you making a 'thing' about it? Please give your DD a high 5 from me!

@ArabellaStrange thank you for the lovely updates, I am so glad that you are much safer now 😊

Sparklfairy · 07/01/2022 05:03

@VeganVampire feel better now? Hmm

OP I'm so impressed with how calmly you handled all that. I'd have been an absolute mess!

ArabellaStrange · 07/01/2022 05:11

Had a bit of a nightmare day today courtesy of greyhound, do not recommend using them. But am now an hour from Miami airport and then I will start wending my way homewards tomorrow morning looking forward to being back in Blighty a huge huge amount. This place is far too large and it makes me feel very small indeed. Thank goodness for the hotel last night, made today so much easier especially the two baths I had.

@VeganVampire

Oh you do make me laugh - you sent an email about how to put bleach in a loo? And then a maintenance man with a hammer hangs around outside your room. And then you go to a new hotel and they give you a bottle of $40 fizz?

Your 'fizz' is $8 in walmart ...... and the rest of your story is just as cheap.

The OP is a person with Bipolar disorder

What's wrong with you vegan vampire? Nasty comment. OP, glad you got out of there. Hats off for keeping your nerve.
WoodenReindeer · 07/01/2022 06:56

Hope you're okay OP. How long will it take to get home? Were you there to visit family/friends/holiday? Did you have a good time before this?

WoodenReindeer · 07/01/2022 06:56

Did you report to the police? Did they get back to you?

BashStreetKid · 07/01/2022 07:16

Well I would say "Sorry, but I can't be asked" if I said it at all! Are you sure that it didn't start out as "asked" rather than "arsed"

Quote:

Can't be arsed dates from at the very least 1968, where it appeared in Hun"ter Davies' authorised biography of The Beatles, in a Paul McCartney quote:

"If they can't be arsed awaiting for me, I can't be arsed going after them. So I sat down and watched telly.""

FortunesFave · 07/01/2022 07:27

They may have a septic tank which means you can't use bleach...but it would have to be enormous to accommodate a whole motel! But maybe that's the problem and why it's blocked?

MrsEricBana · 07/01/2022 07:29

What a lot of odd stateside shenanigans. Good job you are high tailing it home.

ArabellaStrange · 07/01/2022 09:34

I was visiting family, the two most precious people in my world who (thanks to COVID) I had not seen since 2019. So for that reason I am sad to be leaving.
No I didn't report to the police, if my door had have started being actually battered I would have dialed 911 ( had it on Skype ready to press dial) but apart from rattling and banging and being very intimidating, he didn't actually try and get into the room.
It's been a difficult trip, one of my loved ones is suffering from an eating disorder but there were many many moments of joy through being with them. And they should be coming to me this summer, all going well.
Must go and try and find my check in desk, flight is 11.20am to NY and then four hour stop over, landing at Heathrow at around 8am tomorrow. Quite worn out which should help with the plane journey, never flown Delta before so hope they are better than Greyhound!!

OP posts:
wonderstuff · 07/01/2022 09:45

Had a great flight Detroit to London in 2019, I’d say slightly better than BA, definitely be better than Greyhound, hope you have an uneventful trip home.

wonderstuff · 07/01/2022 09:45

With Delta that should have read!

DedafalalalalalusBloom · 07/01/2022 10:34

My experience of cheap motels in the US has been that there is a huge difference in quality when compared to the equivalent UK ones which are largely ok if shabby

  • I've been all over the states and stayed in very high and very low starred places with everything in between, and some of the most icky ones have been Florida and California in terms of bugs and crazies.

The tenderloin district in SF being a particular low point ( I knew it had a bad rep but I come from south London and very little phases me!) - didn't sleep a wink that night due to smackheads outside our door. I ended up barricading myself in my room when they started fighting Shock

peridito · 07/01/2022 11:14

Limited experience but it included cockroaches .

Tal45 · 07/01/2022 11:22

My experience of cheap motels in Florida is that they often have long term residents with mental health and or alcohol problems so I'm not surprised by your experience at all. Everyone drives in the US so Greyhound buses are well known for being horrendous. I hope things go smoothly for you now.

lljkk · 07/01/2022 11:22

There were cockroaches in our first night digs in Florida last month. We stayed in another place a week later that was "a bit of a dive" : no roaches, but $136/room/night for a dive. Eek. Reviews online mentioned drug dealers but we saw no worse than shabbiness ourselves. Oh, and a fairly bad boxed "complementary" breakfast.

Even our otherwise quite nice condo rental had rats in the dumpster outside... oh well, better than aggressive Gators & snakes, right?

Jooox · 07/01/2022 12:03

I know it’s not the point of the thread but it’s making me miss travel Grin

Glad you’re ok and things are looking up OP. Safe travels.

ArabellaStrange · 07/01/2022 13:32

@DedafalalalalalusBloom ahhhh that sounds more scary in some way, violence in your zone but not directed at yourself, shudder.
@Jooox I don't think I'll be up to doing this again for a good couple of years it's slightly easier now I make the airlines aware of my problems but I am going to need a good couple of weeks recovery, back to work Monday but thankfully it's from home, no commute and I really need that right now.
So the airport WiFi has stopped working, kindly stranger allowing me to hotspot on his phone.
It looks like pretty much every flight to NY has been cancelled, EXCEPT for mine (bad snow frozen sleet type thing happening) if everyone could please keep their fingers crossed that this remains the case, that would be fab.
Lots of bummed out people here right now.
And cockroaches suck, I vote for them to be wiped out of existence. Am saving googling all the info about why they are so gross for when I am a bit more distanced from the experience.

No, there's some discussion on it further upthread from others to which I was responding.
