It’s that time of year again... the late Christmas present to our livers!

You may be thinking of doing Dry January to:

*detox a little after seasonal overindulgence, or
*help you cut down a bit generally, or
*help you start to get out of a harmful alcohol habit, or
*just be a bit healthier for a month...

It’s good for all of those things!

I find the MN DJ threads excellent for support, encouragement, sharing info, ‘we’re in this together’ camaraderie, suggestions for grown up drinks, aversion techniques and just fun.

This is my fifth year of DJ and I swear it has made all the difference to me; it was so hard first time, but having succeeded I did dry June and October after that, and do so most years. It has broken my habit, banished much of the craving and reset my relationship with booze. I imagine it's added years to my life.

I won’t be finding DJ too difficult this year, but some will. Hopefully this thread will help.

Throw your hat in the ring, pull up a chair and let's do this together. 🙂☕️🧃

The DJ2022 Wagon creaks to a start in just 5 days, but always stops for latecomers 🙂

This will sound most pathetic, but can I have a penguin huddle? I'm so homesick! I don't want to buckle before I get started!

Penguin huddle firming.... can we have the delicate little fluffy ones in the middle, please? No pecking.

This is a very nice huddle. Thank you MN pengiwings.

BiologicalRealist · 31/12/2021 16:25

I'm in for the first time, love the penguin 🐧 huddles idea. Just downloaded the Try Dry app and ordered some of The Duchess non alcohol drinks off Dry Drinker in the hope they will help replace my wine habit.

FanGirlX · 31/12/2021 16:32

Happy New Year all 😀. Here's to a happy, healthy January.

I won't post until Sunday, as I'm away with friends, so not starting until 2nd.

canyon2000 · 31/12/2021 18:48

Well I have downloaded the Try Dry App and bought a bottle of Gordons 0% gin! Roll on tomorrow! Feeling very positiveHalo

Blaziken · 31/12/2021 19:02

Happy new year all. I'm going to be finishing some wine and having a bit of cava tonight then will start tomorrow with the Try Dry app. We can do this!

hivemindneeded · 01/01/2022 09:13

Morning all! Day 1. Going for a good hill walk to blow off the cobwebs of last night's champagne and port Blush.

Today I'm going to infuse sparkling water with chilli lemon and mint for a kick start to the dry season.

Signing in. I will have 2 events in January that I very likely will have a drink for (they honestly are big/very special occasions) but otherwise am committed to 29 days without a drink. So hope you'll have me in your huddle!

mbosnz · 01/01/2022 11:15

Happy New Year's my favourite internet buddies! Day 1 of our month long adventure. . .

ApolloandDaphne · 01/01/2022 11:20

I'm in. I drank too much on the 30th and spoiled our NYE plans as I was so unwell and tired. I managed two glasses of champagne last night before giving up and going to bed. I definitely need a reset.

SummerScoop · 01/01/2022 11:23

I'm in. Drinking far too much recently, ready for a reset. Off to find the try dry app.

Blaziken · 01/01/2022 11:53

Very pleased to be starting day 1. DH & I finished all the drinks we could last night and are feeling very motivated today. I have the try dry app ready and have weighed myself. That was a shock. I would love to lose some of the three stone I need to shed this month.

Day 1/100.

Runninghorse · 01/01/2022 11:56

Day 2 done. I have downloaded the TryDry app and will be checking in here regularly. I have boiled up a weird but tasty concoction of turmeric, cayenne pepper, lemon juice and ginger which I am adding to ginger cordial and hot water to replace the several glasses of wine I have been drinking each night 🤞🏻it works

HPLikecraft · 01/01/2022 12:00

Happy new year everyone!

Day one and we’re feeling good. It does feel good to be at the beginning of something good, doesn’t it?

Huddle in close, though…. it may be challenging here and there.

What is the app?
I'm very hungover. Glad to be going dry for a bit. Hopefully I'll keep the positive outlook when I've forgotten the hangoverSmile

Flower1976 · 01/01/2022 12:16

I’m in. Finished the drinks I had in and won’t be buying any more. Feeling positive to be doing this journey.

SunscreenCentral · 01/01/2022 12:25

Hello everyone
I'm in for the AF win.
I'll be joining you tomorrow (planned, as NYD is an odd one for me)
There's a lot I want to accomplish in 2022 and alcohol is NOT my friend.

madmumofteens · 01/01/2022 12:58

Happy New Year everyone had a glass of fizz at midnight proud that I left rest to DS good luck everyone x

CruellaDeVilla · 01/01/2022 13:01

I’m looking forward to not drinking if I’m honest

But also a bit scared, what if I can’t do it? My plan is that all white wine is going in the garage as I can resist anything else.

I’m also going to read quit lit and do some self hypnosis. And use the Try Dry app.

mbosnz · 01/01/2022 13:02

Go Blazikin! 100 days - phew!

What I'm realising is how many 'habits' involve wine for me - like bbq. Always have a wine if we touch the bbq. This is problematic, given how much we bbq - tradition is that our first day of bbq is 1st Jan, last day of bbq is 31st December. We're just about to bbq pizza - in the rain, lol. Chugging back the water. . .

I find it helps to focus on what you are going to have. So make a bit of a fuss about what really nice soft drinkls you plan to drink each evening. Part of the appeal of alcohol for me is that slight feel of celebration you get when you open a bottle. and the way it marks: work day is over, now let's relax.' I think if you can create a similar sense of occasion with a soft drink that's more than half the battle.

Also, alcohol does give us sugar. I never normally eat after dinner - never crave a snack but in dry jan I always want something sweet. I think it's the sugar craving that wine usually appeases.

mbosnz · 01/01/2022 14:10

I'm with you re the sugar - I'm planning on treating me/the family to more desserts this month! So on Wednesday, first day back at school for the girls, I'm going to do a sticky date toffee pudding. . .
