Ham cooked in Cola

I am toying with the idea of cooking our Christmas ham in Coca Cola this year but I'm a bit hesitant. Is it nice?
I imagine it to be sticky and sweet, although that does sound good, I don't want to ruin the ham. I
Do anyone have experience of cooking ham in Cola ?

Yes!! I also half some onions and cook them with it too. The result is some sticky sweet oniony goodness that’s amazing with a roast!!! We actually prefer the onion to the meat 🙈

RonniePickering · 21/12/2021 18:28

Tried it for the first time for Christmas dinner a few years ago, now we have it regularly for dinner.

Hopeislost · 21/12/2021 19:17

@myrtleWilson Celeriac bake sounds lovely! Do you have a recipe please?

Does it work without the cloves? - not a fan!

fufulina · 21/12/2021 19:20

I always do nigellas ham in coke on Christmas Eve - then leftovers in a pie on Boxing Day. It’s delicious and very easy. I serve with dauphinois and greens.

PlanktonsComputerWife · 21/12/2021 19:22

Does this work for gammon, then? I have bought a small one for my husband for the first time and have no idea what to do with it!

Me. It’s good without.

That’s how the ham starts out. As a gammon. Before the coke and glaze.
PlanktonsComputerWife · 21/12/2021 19:36

So gammon is just uncooked ham?

Mind blown.😁

Thank you!

Froppysue · 21/12/2021 19:42

It’s amazing, I use cherry coke as I think it tastes better, then make my own glaze 😋

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 21/12/2021 19:43

I do it regularly. I and my family LOVE it.

CiaoForDiNiaoSaur · 21/12/2021 19:45

I think I'm the only person on the planet who doesn't like it! Maybe I did something wrong Confused

ChicCroissant · 21/12/2021 19:56

Love Nigella's ham in coke, we've done it for years as a Boxing Day meal but now do it all year round.

NightmareSlashDelightful · 21/12/2021 20:02

Ooh — ginger beer/ale works too.

mugglenutmeg · 21/12/2021 20:06

It is lovely, but honestly no better than cooked in cider or water with herbs and spices. It's worth it for the novelty, and many swear by it.

ponkydonkey · 21/12/2021 20:08

Same as below equally good cooked in
Cider
Apple juice
Cranberry juice
Any acidic fruit juice

All lovely

KurtWildesChristmasNamechange · 21/12/2021 20:11

I do this most years. I occasionally use Dr Pepper instead of Cola and that's equally good. Roast it off in the oven after slow cooking, with black treacle and mustard glaze.

ItIsMyName · 21/12/2021 20:17

Apple juice, cloves, grated ginger & star anise in the slow cooker is fab, wasn’t overly impressed with the cola version.

myrtleWilson · 21/12/2021 20:21

@Hopeislost of course! Sometimes I do a celeriac/fennel dauphinois but this from a local NE restaurant is lush. You can find celeriac/walnut/caper/creme fraiche recipe online but it's beyond a Telegraph paywall - here are the photos from the book - and if you're ever in the NE and are feeling hungry do try The cookhouse in ouseburn, Newcastle

@myrtleWilson I make that too, I'm down south ... Absolutely love it
Especially good with red cabbage

Agree with this.

Having done this many times in cola, the gammon tastes just as good cooked in water with onions and herbs.

We don't keep the liquid and it does not make any difference to the taste of the ham.

GrannytoaUnicorn · 21/12/2021 22:09

Doesn't that bring worms out of it, or some such gross business???

OnceBitten25 · 21/12/2021 22:36

I use the BBC recipe and cherry coke instead of Coca Cola. It's so tasty! A firm favourite for us

You're not, I think it's disgusting. It tastes exactly what it is, meat cooked in coke 🤢
Fifthtimelucky · 21/12/2021 22:41

I'm with you, OP. Everyone seems to rave about ham cooked in coke, but I am put off from trying it on the grounds that I hate the taste of coke!

Can anyone assure me that but doesn't actually taste at all like coke?
