Board Games for Christmas

Hello,

I'm looking for suggestions for a board game to play on Christmas Day. We used to love Articulate, but there is not enough of us to play this year. We don't like things like monopoly or scrabble for Xmas...too serious! The requirements are:

  • suitable for only 2-3 players!
  • not to complicated (easy to understand the rules after a few drinks).
-Not too rude or cringey ??!
  • Laughter inducing.

Thank you 😊

I saw a version of articulate for 2 in the shops the other day!

I didn’t get exploding kittens either. My sister bought it for me. We played it once and she apologised for buying such a crap game!

We like the Sussed card games, you can stay sitting on the sofa to play! Various themes.

So glad it's not just me with exploding kittens- I keep thinking I must be missing something.....
We've been playing the emoji game recently which is quite quick and easy and fun, or scategories?

Stompythedinosaur · 19/12/2021 23:19

Codenames is my absolute favourite.

I'm so glad I made this post, mostly because I won't end up with Exploding Kittens! But so many interesting suggestions to work through....I'm really quite excited about Xmas now!!

Thank you everyone for all the suggestions. We have gone for; 5 Second Rule, Uno, and due to pure curiosity...Exploding Kittens! Happy Christmas folks 🎄

@Stompythedinosaur

Codenames is my absolute favourite.
Can you play that with 3??
Beachhuts90 · 23/12/2021 23:46

We also love bananagrams and skipbo, if anyone else is looking. Although we normally have a festive argument over validity of various words in bananagrams Grin

Can you play that with 3??

Yes, absolutely. The rules are slightly different (you have a single guesser who is on both teams). It works well though.

I know this is too late now but Funny Bunny is a favourite in our house. We got it for DD a couple of years ago and we all like playing.

Splodgerbodgerbadger · 24/12/2021 10:12

@sadeyedladyofthelowlandsea

This Christmas Day it will be me, my 70yo mother, and teen DC. I've just bought us Ghost Castle because there's no chance of a Monopoly style tantrum or an Uno inspired rage Grin Also because I was SO jealous of my friends who had GC when I was a kid and my parents refused to buy it for me. Monopoly, Scrabble & Trivial Pursuit were 'fun' apparently.
@sadeyedladyofthelowlandsea you’ve just made my Christmas! I didn’t know you can still get Ghost Castle. I loved this game as a kid and tried to get it for DD but could never find it! Smile
sadeyedladyofthelowlandsea · 24/12/2021 10:39

Splodger, I got it from Argos! £21 very well spent Smile It looks as though it's been updated, but I haven't opened it yet. I will report back!

Update on our Christmas games (if anyone is interested!)...

We ended up with 4 adults playing the games aged 20's to 60's.

We liked 5 Second Rule. I would rate it 7/10. It was fun and people did end up coming out with some funny answers, but it was actually quite tiring/exhausting, so we only played a couple of times.

We liked Exploding Kittens. It took a few rounds to understand the tactics and we got bored of it! I think it would be more fun if we stuck at it a bit longer. I think 3-4 people are the right number for this game. I don't think it would work so well with bigger groups.

We never got around to playing Uno.

We ended up playing Consequences. This game is free...you only need paper and pens. This game was hilarious 10/10 Grin

I would like to try Linked In next year!

How did everyone else's games go down? Any definite recommendations for next year?!

Mastermind has gone down well in our house. Been played a lot.

@sadeyedladyofthelowlandsea how is Ghost Castle?

We like exploding kittens, you have to not over think it and once you all “get it” it can be brilliant.

We love Forbidden Island as it’s a collaborative game, so it’s all the players vs the game. Can get very tense/in an excited rather than stressful way towards the end.

Linkee is good but better with lots of players.

I love Ticket to Ride but its not a funny game really.

We took ‘on a scale of 1 to t-tex’ camping this year and almost died laughing, you need a big group for that though

We love code games too and expanded our Collection this year with Harry Potter version and also a picture version, would recommend.

Ilovemycatsomuch · 31/12/2021 22:41

@Nomaj Exploding Kittens is not bad at all. I would have been up for playing it for longer, but the others were caught up in mince pies and wine 🥂

We played on your marks this year, it was excellent but got quite dangerous I ended up with a cut hand and dd (almost) on the floor, we’re going to get our own set and take it on holiday 😂
We also played herd mentality and articulate but I think that worked well in a bigger group.

I bought one of the exit room games too and really enjoyed that, it was an escape room style game and had been done well. We will be buying another.

Newyearoldyou · 02/01/2022 19:42

Exploding kittens is our absolute favorite!
Both dc love it even dh!

Driposaurus · 02/01/2022 19:46

We got Barenpark this year (which we have enjoyed) but also have played Organ Attack with some friends, which I think would definitely suit your requirements. Taco cat goat cheese pizza and Dino Dump card games have both gone down well with the children.
