Looking for a wedding cake for next year.
Bakers charging around £350 which is just too much.
M&S and Ocado no longer do wedding cakes Sad.
Any ideas welcome.
Got to feed 40-50 lovely but hungry greedy people!

I just bought 3 different sized plain white iced fruit cakes from M&S. I'm assuming they still do the plain cakes just not decorated ones.

I put ribbon around them and the florist made some tiny flower decorations to go on the tops. They looked very good and it was less than £100 for the lot.

I've never seen the point of spending £££ on cake.

When speaking to bakers ask the cost of a plain white iced birthday cake, the cost is sometimes lower. People hear wedding and £££££££ get charged. Supermarkets do some nice sheet cakes so decorate one to photo and cut and have the rest underDecorated in the kitchen to serve. Also ask the venue to hold some back so you and other half can enjoy cake too.

My cousin had one of the small iced M&S cakes, just not specially a wedding cake that they bought a “topper” for with their names on. Looked a bit small and sad when they cut it but it tasted beautiful!

The going rate round here for a cake seems to be about £750 which makes it ludicrously about £10 per slice for the 75ish people we are feeding! In the end we asked our local, traditional bakery (you know, the little corner shop that still sells iced buns, gingerbread men, eclairs etc!). The owner is making us a plain 3 tiered sponge with half buttercream icing (so semi “naked” look) for about 1/3 of the going rate! Florist to dress with some flowers! We regularly buy bread etc from them so trust that it will taste good!
