Gousto too much trouble?

39 replies

Rebbecia1234 · 25/11/2021 18:16

I have had to pause my Gousto deliveries as the amount of effort required for each dish (back breaking!). Most dishes involving at least 30 minutes of intense chopping, toasting frying etc. I am vegetarian so that might make the dishes a little more labour intensive.
Has anyone else found this?

I enjoyed Gousto when I had a subscription for a bit but yes you are all correct. Full dishwasher after every single meal 😆

I didn't mind the time taken to cook it, I found the times pretty accurate so deliberately got a mixture of them. The longer ones were very intensive though.

Dishes with potato as a side always had far too much. Learned pretty quickly to cut that down.

@EewwwDavid

We've been using gusto for 3 months now and I absolutely love the quality of the ingredients and the dishes are always beautiful (except the Joe Wicks ones, they're always a bit lacking in flavour!). They definitely take longer to cook than the recipe card says though. And I always find the carb portion of the meal to be too big.

Thankfully DH is really enjoying cooking them! I always make sure when it's my turn that I make one of the "prep in 10 mins" ones. Grin

Funnily enough I was also disappointed with the Joe Wickes recipe I made.

@Bagelsandbrie

We got fed up with it for that reason too- and after a while all the meals taste quite similar with similar herbs / ingredients.

I found this too. Even when choosing what seemed to be quite different types of meals. It was partly that everything was just a bit bland.

Gousto recipes are so long-winded and I'm a decent cook. Hello fresh are easy as anything and often take less time than stated. Their recipes are good to follow even if you don't get the food from them.

Yes, I agree. May try Hello Fresh again.

I didn't like them because they didn't remove any effort for me and actually involved more effort.

I look through the method and see where I can take a short cut or get 2 things on at once. Because they’re so methodical to make it fool proof they’ll say things like chop and fry an onion, then boil a kettle of water when you could do both at the same time.

Just choose the 10 minute meals or the new prepped in 5 ones where you bung everything in a pot and put it in the oven. If you check the cooking times there's loads of quick easy meals.

I gave up on it as DH seemed to think it was his personal mission to use up Gousto ingredients randomly.

We had them for a while and the prep just seemed to take forever. I usually buy frozen diced onions, garlic, ginger, chillis, coriander, parsley and basil so having to chop anything like that took extra time.

We do use many of the recipe cards though but with ready prepped veg to save time.

I think some recipes are just unnecessarily complicated. I stopped bothering with making separate 'stocks' just chuck it all in the main dish, it takes a lot less cooking surface and washing up.
I've cooked 3 veggie gousto recipes in just over an hour earlier this week. (I'm just buying the ingredients and reusing the recipe cards.)
I can do this in a small kitchen if there's nobody around just good music on the radio.
I've made sure I use the quickest recipes.

I'm afraid I don't agree with the early posters. DH and I both find that the timings given are pretty spot on. Maybe we just cook quickly!

It is so much quicker to have everything there rather than have to dig out and measure ingredients then put them back in cupboards the fridge etc . I don't find they there is any more chopping of vegetables than in our other cooking.

We did hello fresh for a while and got fed up of all the plastic sachets, especially as there were 3 of us. Dont know if gusto is the same, but The teeny blocks of cheese individually wrapped etc. drove me nuts... And everything so salty.

I really liked it and found the timings spot on! I think the convenience is more in having had someone else choose & weighing out the stuff, rather in recipe timings.
